Help - Potty Training 21m old

Day two of potty training our 21m old and I already want to throw the towel in!

Doesnt seem to be showing any interest at all in going on the potty and has had numerous accidents which he is finding hilarious!

We've tried to do the bare bum method.

Feeling very stressed with it - even though we know it’s a long process and it was never going to be instant.

Do you think we should persevere with what we’re doing? Change our strategy? Or park this and pick it up again in a couple of months?

I think he might be a bit too young, were they showing any signs of being ready?

Are they showing readiness signs ?

21m is a bit young based on people I know / my dd
Can you wait and try again in aug/sep?

We trained at 26/27m after signs of readiness and were done after a (slightly fraught) bank holiday weekend

Tbh, it’s probably too early. I’m sure you’d succeed if you persevered but it’ll be tons easier- literally a few days/week if your child is older, able to communicate and actually willing/wanting to use a potty or toilet. I waited till mine were slightly past ready (closer to 2.5/3) and it only took a few days of diligent going to the toilet and we didn’t really have any accidents after that

He isn't even two?!? Most boys are nearly three before they get it. Leave it until he is older. Put the potty away.

He’s too young and not ready. Park it and come back to it in a few months. There’s no rush.

If it’s too much it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. At this age introducing the potty as part of daily life goes a long way. So if you see him starting to poo you can pop him straight on the potty until he gets the idea that that is where it goes, popping on the potty at key moments- when waking up, after bath, after meals etc.
Lots of talking about the process- e.g. poo and pee goes in the potty, teaching him the signs/ vocabulary for poo/ pee, reading toddler potty training books together all help set the groundwork so it’s more of a gradual potty learning.

Just let him watch you wee. We have only just started potty training (slowly) my three year old yet he mimics his dad standing at the toilet whilst holding his willy.

We potty trained our son at a similar age. I remember wanting to throw the towel in on day two also, and then suddenly on day three he got it. So maybe try one more day. I think Oh Crap and NHS said from 18 months.

We watched lots of clips on YouTube of potty songs - baby shark and cocomelon. And also we followed Oh Crap, except we found treats worked. So a chocolate button and huge praise and cheers for a wee, and two for a poo. On the third day we managed to go out to the park for three hours with no accidents.

Good luck!
