Car seat pads

We're about to start potty training our recently turned 3 year old and are looking for recommendations for a car seat pad. I've had a look online but all the ones I've seen have pretty poor reviews.

This may not help so feel free to ignore but we didn’t ever use these. Once potty training was successful - which happened quickly as he was definitely ready, accidents were extremely rare. We’d have a potty in the car and stop if required.
Hope the process goes well for you.

Same, it was enough to have a wee just before leaving. We also used to just put on a nappy for a very long journey and say that it was in case they fell asleep, and they were fine with that because they still wore a nappy at night-time.

Thank you! We didn't use them with our older DC either as he took to it like a duck to water but our youngest isn't so keen to ditch the nappies. He'll use the potty for a pee when naked but never when he has clothes on and he won't do a poo in the toilet either. He just doesn't seem to have any interest yet. I'm hoping to get him out of nappies this summer before starting nursery in August.

We do long trips to grandparents in the Highlands, think 6-8 hour trips. We have a carry potty in the car but also have used disposable puppy pads to line the car seats. We have travel sick children and the puppy pads work well to keep the seats clean if we need to clean up sick. You need to cut slits for the straps.

You could maybe try a reusable pull up for the car, they feel like pants so you're not 'going backwards' but will protect the seat, just look for ones that contain a full wee, 'The nappy lady' sells them. Another trick is to put a disposable pull up on over their clothes.

Please don't ever use puppy pads, they contain chemicals that shouldn't be near children's skin and aren't suitable for use with car seats.

If he doesn't seem ready perhaps put it on hold for a couple of months? Do nursery require him to be dry? I stopped it with my son and waited 2/3 months, it was much easier the second time when he was closer to 3.

I've got these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Koo-Protector-Pushchair-Waterproof-Absorbent/dp/B09HTS9T5B/ref=asc_df_B09HTS9T5B?mcid=cf9dd8eb39c034b7b83ffd2866d3f648&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696352643958&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11882697250173079981&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007395&hvtargid=pla-1600336909913&gad_source=1&th=1
But to be honest he's only ever had one wee accident in the car so I can't really say whether they work or not. I'd say they probably do if it's just a little bit and your child is trained enough to mind about it and let you know. I wouldn't think it would hold a big wee.

We got some of those large puppy training floor pads, folded up and put in home bargains sold them I think

BertieBotts · 23/04/2025 12:58

I don't think you need them. Boots and supermarkets sell disposable "changing mat" things which look exactly like puppy pads which I think you could use if you really needed something. We tended to stick a muslin down in the seat/buggy if needed, just make sure it's not too thick to affect the fit of the car seat straps. And best not to use anything if he's already in a booster seat with seatbelt. You can usually take the car seat cover off and wash it in a washing machine if you do have any mishaps.

If we ever did a long drive we did put nappies on.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/04/2025 17:27

We got a Close Pop-in reusable car seat/buggy liner. We never needed it in the end as son potty trained reliably very quickly. It did make me feel more confident about taking him out though.

We also have the Koo-di protectors mentioned by a PP but DC hasn’t yet had an accident in the car so I can’t comment on how good they are. It definitely gives me some peace of mind though if they do start complaining of needing a wee and I’m not near somewhere I can easily pull over!
