4 yo still in night nappies

4 yo dd has been dry in the days since just before her 3rd birthday but she has only ever had a handful of dry nights.
I've left her in nappies at night assuming at some point they'll at least become lighter but they're still really heavy.
She has a wee just before going to bed and again in the morning.
How do I get her dry at night?

I think for some children it does just take a while. I know it’s a pain as nappies are expensive.

Nighttime dryness is connected to a hormone that kicks in around 4-5y. How close to 5y is she? If she's still having really wet morning nappies, then I'd say she isn't ready. Leave her in pull ups overnight a bit more longer. There's some good advice on the ERIC website about night time dryness and when to seek extra help on the potty training page.

Wouldn’t even worry at 4. It’s only after 7 or if they have been dry for 6 months and then start wet wetting the bed/weeding in nappies in bed again then they will look to see what can be done

Thanks. She's 5 in August. A huge huge part of me just wants to say she's not ready, it'll happen when she's ready but talking to her friend's mums stressed me out!

My DD is a few months off 5 and has only in the last 6 weeks started being dry overnight. It just happened all of a sudden, prior to that we had hardly ever had a dry nappy overnight. The health visitor told me it was hormonal and you can’t train it, so try not to worry!

My DD was 5 in January and still not dry at night, as a PP said its linked to a hormone so you just have to wait, doctors won't do anything until they are 7

Lots can happen between now and August! ERIC says that there are medications for after 5y so maybe see how she goes until then and then you could have a chat with your GP about what they suggest?

Nice guidelines are that you can treat from 5y. Here is the ERIC link with some advice on what to cite to the GP - https://eric.org.uk/advice-for-children-with-night-time-wetting/

My son wasn’t dry at night until age 6 despite being dry in the day at 2.5.
It just happened by itself in the end. I also stressed about it as all my other friends kids were dry at night earlier but some kids it just takes longer.
So nothing to worry about. Just keep the night time pull ups on and you’ll find just one day she’s dry and then when she’s had a week or so of being dry you can try without the pull ups and she’ll be fine.

LavenderBlue19 · 17/04/2025 09:33

My son wasn't dry at night until nearly 6. My friend's daughter was dry at night at 2.5, same as in the day. There's a huge variation and no concern until 7.

FluffMagnet · 17/04/2025 09:34

DD has only just started being dry at night over the past fortnight, and she is 6. We never worried about it, as her body simply wasn't ready. Yes some of her friends were dry at night almost immediately after potty training, but she was still having huge wet nappies right up to the point of being suddenly and reliably dry.

TheQuietestSpace · 17/04/2025 09:49

My daughter is 5 in August and exactly the same - still really heavy nappies overnight, totally dry during the day with no issues. It hadn't occurred to me to worry about it tbh, I will start worrying when she gets quite a bit older!

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 17/04/2025 10:18

My DS was at least 7 when he was finally dry at night - I can’t remember now but, apart from the expense, it wasn’t a big deal to stick him in a pull-up. He got there eventually and he’s never had an accident since.

Humpycamel · 17/04/2025 15:39

Thank you everyone. I think i just need to stop worrying and embrace the nappies!

They’re all different.

DD was day trained at 2 with hardly any accidents.

Still in DryNites at night at 9.

They go up to “age 13+” size for a reason, and they’re hardly a niche product as they’re sold in every supermarket.

As long as any medical issues have been ruled out, don’t worry about it and let her sleep comfortably.

As you say- “embrace the nappies!”

🙂
