Perspective would be much appreciated!

DS is 2.5, he has been using the potty casually for wees when he has the nappy off anyway (mainly bedtime/morning) for a few months. Generally self initiated once he worked out what it was for.

He had a few dry nights last week, so I decided to go for it and took nappies off last Thursday. Had a long weekend around the house/ local area,, mainly bare bummed or loose trousers. There's been a few low level outings.

It's been 6 days, it's about a 60% hit rate for (mainly self initiated) wees, does not take kindly to it being suggested he might need a wee. He's reluctant to poo on the potty, has managed 4 so far, I was out of the room for one of them, he just sat himself down and did it, then freaked out a little. Now he asks for a nappy, but this morning managed one on the potty and seems more positive about doing it again.

He's OK round the house, but outside the house is harder, more reluctance to sit on the potty.

I'm just not sure if I'm pushing it and he's not ready? Or are my expectations wrong? I just dont feel there's been that much progress since day 1. He understood what to do before we started.

My first child was freakishly easy to potty train. 3 days of weeing everywhere until she understood what to do, there were hardly any accidents ever after that, maybe 1 or 2. But she was a little older.

I'm not sure what's normal for this stage (6 days in)? Is it just carry on and see how it goes? Or would it be better to back off and wait a little longer?

sounds like he's doing rather well, keep poking along.

Sounds like it’s going pretty well, keep going.

Thanks that's really helpful. I think I might have read too much of either 'caused a problem by starting too early' or 'my child was fully trained in 3 days'. It's hard to get a perspective on what's normal.

He's got to go back to nursery on Thursday and I just can't picture how it will work in such a distracting environment without immediate access to a potty.

It's so up and down. This morning was perfect, but this afternoon 3 accidents in an hour. Tired and out of the house I think. I'm just not sure it feels like it'd progressing.

as a boy, when out of the house, get him to pee on bushes and trees most boys seem to be amused and enjoy seeing if they can pee on the odd mushroom or dandelion. in that regard easier than girls.
if living totally urban plan your outings based on where there are good toilet options.
