Potty training. Isn’t this fun…

Hi, I’ve potty training my toddler… or trying to.

he keeps having accidents. He never once peed in the potty. He has about 10 accidents a day. He understands what potty is and what to do there but it’s like he just doesn’t feel a wee coming on.

he will wee on the floor or sofa or wherever he is in that moment. THEN run to the potty after he’s done.

whilst he pees he’s like mega surprised by the sensation.

we tried potty training with the little toilet and training seat on adult toilet (the training seat he doesn’t like because it’s cold)

that isn’t an issue with the little toilet. He seems to like sitting on it and doesn’t cry etc.

anyone else experienced this? He’s nearly 3 and I’m on mat leave expecting another baby and would love for him to be potty trained by the time the baby is here.

any advise would be great

How old is he?

Potty training with a newborn sibling imminent was never going to be a particularly great time for him. There is too many changes happening and any progress he could make will likely be lost once the new baby arrives.

It would probably be much more productive to wait until after the baby is here and try again when it's warmer weather.

It sounds like he's not quite ready yet, so he knows he's weeing but hasn't figured out the sensation of needing a wee and going to the potty.
You'll get parents on here telling you you'd be a terrible parent for leaving it too late.
But honestly for the sake of your sanity and stress levels (and your DS's stress levels) I would leave it for a couple of months and try again. A month can make a massive difference at that age.
When they're ready they do get it very quickly and the whole thing is far less stressful

He won't feel a wee coming on, that's partly what the training is going to teach him. He doesn't have to notice when he's about to wee when he's in nappies. Try taking his pants and trousers off and watching him like a hawk. You'll notice before he does and then you just pop him on the potty when you see him about to wee.

Wow, almost identical situation here with everything, son 3 in 6 weeks, expecting another in about the same time.

He started off ok, was keen to go to the toilet for a few weeks. But then all of a sudden he's just reluctant to go and now doesn't even say that he needs to. He hasn't mastered bladder control as he has about 5-7 accidents per day. Once we manage to get him on the toilet (either after accident or not), he will only do a very small amount of wee. But then within 20-30 mins, he will have an accident.

Unfortunately, we couldn't start earlier as he had bowel movement issues.
