Poo problems

How long did it take your little ones to 'get' pooing in the potty/loo?

My son is 2yrs 9m and has gotten the idea of weeing in the potty, he can decide he needs a wee, get there, and push his own pants and trousers down. Now we are only on day 4, so in all likelihood he'll get there himself. But so far, all but one of his poos have been in his trousers. The silver lining is that he isn't withholding it. But this is all new to me as my daughter never had any problems with poo, she was so fascinated by it she actually wanted to poo (sorry if TMI 🤣).

Please tell me your experiences and any good tips for helping him to poo in the right place without freaking him out.

Mine just decided one day aged about 3 that she was going to do poos in the toilet. Until then it was very traumatic and I really struggled.

@thatsmypotato Sorry that you struggled, how is your little one now?

I'm trying to rein in my anxiety about this so I don't turn it into a bigger issue than it needs to be. My boy goes back to nursery tomorrow for the first time since potty training tomorrow, and I'm nervous about it. I am planning on calling them on my lunch break today to talk through the whole process with them.

She's OK and managed to start school fine with no accidents. She's still a bit scared of toilets at other people's houses though.

@thatsthatsmypotato Is anyone a fan of doing a poo at someone else's house? I can completely understand the desire to stick with your own home if possible 🤣

Did you do anything to encourage her at all, or did she just do it off her own back?

She just did it off her own back once her friends at nursery did I think. There's a book called NO More Nappies I'd read every so often but I had to be really careful not to talk too much about poo or she'd get upset. It is a weird thing when you think about it so makes sense it takes a while.

My son took ages to poo in a potty/toilet. It's very common that they master weeing but pooing does seem to take longer.

There's a few books/videos about it.

We ended up bribing him with goldfish....

Mine pooed in his pants til almost school age, then one day he just went on the toilet and that was that. I have zero advice but I hated the whole process and it took about 18 months in total for him to be 100% toilet trained with zero accidents.

My youngest has just turned two and has basically potty trained himself since I left the potty out to get him familiarised with it! Chalk and cheese. It's just confirmed to me though that it's nothing I did wrong, I have parented them both exactly the same way and each child has been totally and utterly different from the day they were born.

So far we have a sticker chart that he is happily using for wee, I've also mentioned that he gets a sticker for poo as well.

I also had a call with his key worker at nursery, who has reassured me that it's all normal and they will help him at there end. I somehow got it into my head that they'd put him back into nappies after a bit. But not the case thankfully.

We also used the poo goes to pooland video on YouTube which he quite liked.

He'll get there, they all seem to make the decision to be clean and dry themselves, as long as you give them plenty of opportunity to.

It's nice to talk through it with people who have been through it. As nice as our health visitors are, they don't always have current, actual experience of potty training in our area.

The boy has aced wee, and hasn't had any accidents at all, but hasn't been for his usual number 2 today. Might not be an issue, but I don't want to cause any issues. Does anyone have any advice?
