DS is 2y 10m and we gently introduced the potty a while ago. It‘a been sat in his view so that it’s not a foreign object to him and he knows what it’s called, what it’s for etc. He roleplays taking his toys to the toilet, so no issues with understanding.

He’s done a grand total of about 2 pees in the potty (to rapturous applause and praise), but seems to prefer using his nappy. He won’t even consider doing a poo in the potty and just says he wants to do it in his nappy.

He will sit on the potty but never actually does anything.

He’s been to the toilet a million times with me (even when I don’t want him to come 🤣) and it’s not really inspiring him.

I’ve been conscious of not pushing him or making a big deal of it, but I think it’s time to move on a bit. I’ve maybe been a bit too lax and need to give him a nudge.

So, please help me. Do I go for the nappy off at home routine? Try pants (he has lots of character ones waiting oh him)? Tell him Santa will bring an extra present?

Thanks!

I think the problem is that modern disposable nappies don't feel wet when they are wearing them. In our day (by which I mean mine), we were basically wearing a hand towel on our behind and it was soaking wet. The 70s babies were only too delighted to get out of nappies, but the incentive isn't there for today's kids.

No advice sorry. I didn't do it very well myself.

Thanks for the reply!

I think you’re right about the nappies. Even after a full night, he says his nappy is fine in the morning. He’s definitely not feeling any wet.

Maybe pants are necessary so that he can feel that wetness and realise it’s not nice.
