Constipation at 28 days potty training

Started potty training with my DS at 2.5 years old. We did the 3 days at home method, starting off bare bum and then working up to pants & trousers.
He's really got the hang of it for wees and accepts that we always sit on the potty at set times of day and can go around 3 hours in-between wees. He's happy sitting on the potty reading a book but once he's done a wee he wants to get off straight away so we have to coax him to sit there for a bit longer.

Poos however have been a different story. He used to go once a day but after having some early accidents in his trousers and in the bath he now goes 4 or 5 days in-between poos. Even nursery have noticed the change.

It seems to really distress him and he says his tummy hurts so I took him to the gp who prescribed movicol paediatric and suggested one sachet a day to see if that helped.

I've just given him the first dose today and I'll see if it has any effect over the next 7 - 10 days. The gp said they couldn't feel any impaction in his bowels but said tackling the constipation early on was important.

I've got 2 x potty training books, a sticker chart, pottys in every room and a toilet seat adapter. We've looked at the Poo Goes To Poo land book online and I'm trying to get a paper copy.

What else can I try to get us over the poo hump?

Following because I’m in the same situation as you OP with my DD. She won’t ask for a nappy and won’t go in a potty.
So far the only way to get her to poop was to run her ragged in the soft play whilst wearing pull ups. She flat out refuses to poo.

My daughter is the same! She just point blank refuses to poop! To the point she makes herself sick trying to stop it coming out!!! I’m having a rough weekend with it, always hoping for a better day tomorrow 😅

We're on day 4 of movicol with a high fibre diet and he's now pooing every 3rd day.
It's still painful for him to pass but not as traumatic as when he was going every 4 or 5 days.

He's so grumpy on the morning of day 3 and I can see him fighting the urge to poo.
Today he sat on his potty after lunch and we watched a train video to help relax him until he pooed - then we said 'hello' to it and flushed it down the toilet.

I'm hoping after a few more days of the movicol he'll have moved to pooing every 2 days and it won't be so painful for him to go.

Yay, another poo, 24 hours after the last one!
Feel like we're getting back to 'normal'.
I'll keep on with the movicol for another week and then try phasing it out to see if things stay regular.
