Potty training great at home, terrible at nursery

My 29 month old recently asked to wear pants instead of nappies, so we thought we'd get started with potty training. He's done all his poos on the potty since he was about 8 months (he wouldn't go in his nappy once he started solids), so we're just dealing with wees here.

We started on Friday afternoon, and things went great over the weekend. He had a few accidents, but by Sunday evening he was telling us that he needed to wee, and making it successfully to the potty. He also went from doing little wees really frequently, to larger wees every 1.5-2hrs. Since then he's only been at home in the afternoons (he goes nursery in every morning, and for a full day on Wednesdays), and he's had a nappy on for his nap, but when he's been awake we've only had a couple of accidents. This evening after he had done a wee and a poo, he declared himself a 'potty star' (a phrase he's got from his potty book).

The story at nursery is totally different. He just holds on until he wees himself, and doesn't even tell anyone he's all wet. He kicks up a huge fuss about being taken to the potty, and even if they successfully get him there he doesn't do anything. He's been really easily upset this week, and I think all the accidents at nursery are getting to him. When my husband picked him up today the nursery worker said she didn't think he had any awareness of when he was weeing, and didn't know what to do on a potty (basically, he's not ready). But he must know what's happening, and he's perfectly capable at home!

Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do?! We've considered just continuing with the potty at home and sending him to nursery in nappies, but I don't know if that really solves anything. A different nursery worker said she thinks it's worth trying for at least another week, but it seems kind of cruel if he's getting upset by it, and I don't want to put him off nursery!

We are having the same issue with our DS who is a similar age.

I’ve no advice but following in the hope someone has some words of wisdom.

I’m at my wits end with it all and thinking to resort back to pull ups for a few weeks at nursery then retackle it over Christmas.

Being persistent and consistent and our 3 who are 2 and 3 have been out of day nappies for a year for our girls the 2s and son a year and a half hes 3..just started son without a bed nappy about 6 weeks ago and seems to be going good aswell..none liked a potty so after a couple of days at the start we moved to toilet and they all ask to go and go fine at the toilet. They go grandparents and relatives and and just ask for toilet when they want it. Saved us a fortune funnily enough our teens were same potty didn't work straight to toilet aswell

If it gives you any hope @Firsttimetrier, we persisted and things got gradually better. He is now dry at nursery I would say 80 percent of the days he's there, and probably about the same at home. Nursery were really amazing about it and basically said some kids just take longer than others, regardless of 'readiness'. Hope things get better for you - it is a tricky time!

Thank you. Although losing hope tbh. Tried to put a nappy back on him this morning and it caused WW3.

I feel very let down by nursery and think there is something more going on tbh. If it was a few accidents a week, I could accept that but the fact it’s every day, for the last 3 weeks, after having no issues for 5 weeks is concerning.

DH going to call them and work out a plan because it’s getting a bit too much.
