Refusing to wee on potty

Hey everyone,

DS is 2 and a half and we've done bits of potty training in past but ultimately decided he wasn't ready and stopped the first time we went all in with it, this wasn't long after his 2nd birthday. Anyway with school holidays I decided now was the time to try again. Were 4 days in and he's yet to take himself to the potty/toilet or ask to go, if I ask if he wants a wee he says not yet And when I put him on he will hold it and wee on himself shortly after. He's had maybe 2/3 wees after me putting him on it and he's really excited to show me when he's done after but I'm just getting right down with it. I didn't realise how frustrating itd be lol I've got all the stickers and charts, bargained with treats but nothing yet .. not sure if I'm just expecting the world too soon but what's normal and what isn't? How soon does it happen and how do I know if it's too soon for him?

I had to take both of mine and put them on the potty and tell them to wet at regular intervals. I found about every hour and half worked.

Thanks, I do take him every hour sometimes more often if he's drank more and he just holds it! Soon as he comes off he wees within minutes in his clothes. I think the times he has weed on toilet has just be pure luck of him being busting!

It does take time. Mine were older but it took a couple of weeks both times. I couldn’t leave it later as they are summer borns and I needed them dry for the last year of pre school

If he wees minutes after getting off the potty maybe you just need to convince him to sit for a bit longer. Blowing bubbles are good for releasing the muscles or even some TV for a distraction. And maybe the stickers and charts are a bit complicated for a 2.5YO? I’d go with instant gratification and give him a smartie for every wee. But it takes time, I’d give it until day 7 before deciding whether it is/isn’t working. Also to minimise on the washing you could just have him run around bottomless for a bit and actually seeing the wee comes out can help it click for some kids too! Good luck.

Oh and is he helping clean up accidents? Wet pants in the machine, mop up the puddle, going upstairs to get new pants etc. You never want to shame them obviously but sometimes they do learn from being inconvenienced!

We started potty training two weeks ago and had exactly the same as you described, weeing just after being sat on the potty. It was so frustrating and making me down but on day 8 he suddenly got it and he's been mostly accident free since! So I would say keep persevering! I did lots of reading on the best approach to take and I read that stickers and reward charts aren't great because you're not teaching them to listen to their body and go when they need to, you're teaching them to only go for a reward which doesn't help them to get the actual concept of using the potty. It can also put a lot of pressure on them because they might sit on the toilet and try but they're not rewarded and only rewarded for producing something which can cause a lot of pressure which can then increase accidents.
