Potty training help

Hi, I am trying to potty train my 2.5 year old but not sure if she's ready or how to know if she is ready or not.

She understands what the potty and toilet are for and will hold nappy when she has done a pee but she's very hit or miss about whether she will sit on the potty or toilet. I'll ask if she needs, sit her on it, she'll get off and then have an accident a few minutes later 🤷

Is it worth persevering this week to see if she gets it or trying at a later date?

Thanks

Signs of readiness aren’t what you’d often think. Modern disposable nappies are so good that lots of kids have very little awareness of weeing. More you need language skills, ability to follow instructions and able to recognise and express needs. I’d be looking along the lines of:
-Can she follow a 2 step instruction e.g. put that toy away then get your shoes?
-Can she sing a familiar nursery rhyme?
-Can she express a need such as I’m thirsty, can I have a drink?

If yes then I’d go for it. For the most part 2.5YOs are more compliant the 3YOs, plus it’s summer so ideal for running around without many clothes on, so probably good timing.

Either you can do the Oh Crap method which is naked on the bottom half or a more traditional method so into knickers and take her regularly. I would never ask a child that isn’t fully and reliably trained if they need it though, it’s always going to be a no unless they’re literally mid pee, because recognising that feeling in advance is exactly what you’re teaching them! But you can bribe with chocolate buttons, let them watch an iPad etc. Just be consistent and once you decide to go for it commit to that method for 7-10 days even if it doesn’t go well initially.

Thank you, that makes me feel a bit better about starting it! She is a great talker and can follow instructions so in that sense she is definitely ready.

I'll stock up on the chocolate buttons and reward stickers and keep at it! 😊

I am a week into training my 3 year old. We keep telling him that he is a big boy now and big boys use the potty/toilet.

For a whole weekend we kept him home and bare bottom and set times to put him on the potty and kept the potty in the room we play in - luckily kitchen with hard floors.

It's tough but he needed to start to see when he is weeing and there will be tonnes of accidents to start with. 1 week in he shots wee wee and runs of to the toilet.

If you don't think she is ready or being distressed - there is no rule that children potty train at the same time. This is my second try with my son as he was hysterical when we tried the first time.
