Moviolas nightmare!

Hi all and apologies as I know movicol is something discussed frequently but I'm not sure if this is normal.

My daughter 3.5 years has had ongoing constipation issues for a while including stool withholding and refusing to poo in the toilet.

I took her to the GP who initially prescribed lactulose which worked well to begin with but then her pooing again began to be less frequent and large movements even on high dose so I went back to the GP who prescribed movicol at the beginning of the month.

Since then we haven't had a solid bowel movement despite reducing the dose to now only 1/2 a sachet a day. She goes daily but the poo is so soft that consequently she doesn't seem to know when she needs to go until it is too late. I have tried placing her on the toilet after every meal but she doesn't go and refuses to sit for longer than the time it takes to do a wee (which she usually does).

Movicol is making her poo paste-like but no solid lump (I am unsure of whether this is normal or it should at least have some kind of poo shape!) At present I am not sure of whether it is still a psychological issue of toilet refusal or whether she genuinely doesn't know she needs to go/ can't get the toilet in time. Will this improve with time or should we be looking at alternatives? I don't know how to reduce much more than a half sachet a day but equally don't want to stop it completely and return to weekly 'monster' poos lol! Any advice from someone who has been through the same issues would be really appreciated! Smile

You need to continue until it's water, you need to completely clear the blockage, so far you haven't.

Unfortunately they do lose control so you'll also need pull-ups. But that's how disimpaction works, your daughter doesn't need to be going everyday, she needs the problem tackled, her bowel will now be stretched and it needs completely empting to go back to normal, then you basically restart from nothing.

It's horrible, but until you actually do this the problem doesn't really go away.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we did the disimpaction at the start, we are now on a maintenance dose but it is still too loose to avoid soiling incidents. Just wondered if anyone had experience of movements still being too soft, what is normal etc.

It sounds like you need to reduce it again, I'd probably go to half a sachet every other day.

You may also need to start a food diary, we were advised to stop using brown bread, which helped.

Thank you, yes we're keeping food and poo diaries but will try and move to 1/2 sachet every other day and see how we go with that.

Good luck, it's such a guessing game at this point.
