Won’t poo on the loo - please help!

My son has been potty trained since August. He was just over 3 when we did it, took to it really well and we only had a few accidents after the first couple of days. However, after a strong start with poos something spooked him and he hasn’t been able to get past needing a nappy to poo since. He hasn’t even entertained the whole ‘nappy on while sat on the toilet’ thing but we always have nappy on in the bathroom and flush it down the loo after. Yesterday, randomly, he did a tiny poo while doing a wee, and then later tried on the toilet again and just did one! Amazing! I was so excited to see this slightly stressful stage pass us but then today, he’s again done a really small poo with no fuss but he now really needs one but is holding it in. He’s sitting and trying but saying it hurts and won’t let it go. I’m so gutted and now don’t know what to do - do I stay strong and keep popping him on the loo to try, or do I give him a nappy again as I really don’t want to cause issues with withholding/constipation etc. Any advice would be so gratefully received - thanks if you’ve read this far!

Do you use a potty at all? Or just the toilet

id really be moving away from nappies as much as you can

If he is showing signs of withholding, I'd give him a nappy to poo in. You really don't want to end uk in that cycle. Take it back to a nappy for poo and work toward sitting on the toilet with the nappy on.

We haven’t used the potty for a while now, and he’s dry at night too so nappies literally just went on to poo. He would hold his poo all day and then generally poo at home in the evening. No amount of bribing or reasoning could convince him to try on the toilet again, until yesterday. I’m just so confused that he’s been able to do 3 over the last two days with no problems and now can’t seem to go. He’s not asking for a nappy yet but I don’t think it’ll be long, he just keeps saying it’s hurting him. Totally unsure what to do for the best.

Get the NHS story/app called Poo Goes To Pooland and read it repeatedly with him.

I have no advice but sending all the solidarity because we're in a similar place with three year old DD and I'm about ready to hurl myself out of the window.

We have had the app for a long time and unfortunately it’s not helped. He’s a smart kid but also so stubborn and all the usual tricks people have suggested just haven’t worked :(

Oh man, I’m so sorry you’re going through it too. It’s really stressful and I’m so upset that our opportunity to move forward has quickly disappeared! I know it’s apparently common but I don’t know anyone in real life who’s experienced this!
