DD afraid of sitting on potty

My DD is 19 months and suffers with awful nappy rash, every nappy change comes with an almighty meltdown. Her speech is good for her age and I feel I am able to communicate with her well, so I decided to give potty training a go, albeit earlier than I anticipated.

I have kept her bottoms off and am sitting her on the potty every 30 mins or so. She refuses to sit for longer than a few seconds and gets very irritated if I try to sit her back down with positive encouragement.

She has also been holding her wee in when she has her bottoms off. She held herself all afternoon today until she wet herself (and me) when we were having a cuddle on the sofa. I tried to sit her on the potty when I realised she was weeing but she immediately stopped when she realised she was going on the potty.

Any advice? I am worried I have made a complete cock of this already and made her fearful of potty training😢.

Put the potty away out of sight for now and put her back in nappies and forget about it.

She's two young right now, she's shown you that.

You can try again in a few months time.

I agree with the pp, she’s not ready so I would keep going with nappies/ pull ups. My little one is 2 and we’re only just introducing her to the potty and talking about it.
If she’s holding it in and refusing to sit then my worry would be she’s now becoming afraid so I would pause for now.

What @WeightoftheWorld

Also something interesting I recently learned is we should only encourage them to try on the potty every 2 hours or maybe every hour.

All this advice of trying every 20-30 mins just encourages them to empty a partially full bladder. We want them to learn to fill their bladder properly then empty it.

Just try again another time. Dd is potty training and she was 2 in March. Ds did it 3 months shy of 3.

Also with my kids we didn't really 'sit them on the potty' at all initially. Just had it in the living room then if they chose to sit on it then great. On day 1 of actual potty training our kids just played / went about their day bare bummed then when they started to wee on the floor I charged in and caught a bit of wee in the potty & gave loads of praise. Thats his it starts, just bare bum with me and dh being on 'high alert'! They soon put the pieces together and started weeing on it themselves.

How not his

Agree she's not quite ready. I would deal with the nappy rash. If it's not responding to standard treatment can you go back to the GP? What treatments have you tried? It sounds tough.

Barleysugar86 · 04/05/2024 21:56

We tried my little one at two and she was very very anti the idea, even with treat incentives. We left it another four months and tried again and she was very open to the idea and picked it up in less than a week. Waiting and coming back to it really helped.

For the nappy rash have you tried daily bottom baths/ leaving the nappy off for ten minutes after wiping for the skin to dry/ different nappies?

LeftPhalange92 · 04/05/2024 22:37

Thanks all. I think I’ll pull the potty away for now and try again in a couple of months.

Re nappy rash, we have tried different nappies, various creams, leaving nappy off, whenever I think we’ve got it sussed it comes back 🙃.

Can you go straight to the toilet with an insert? We had this with DD, similar age.

We went straight to the toilet and she was dry day and night on her 2nd birthday.

HollyKnight · 05/05/2024 02:20

This might not be relevant, but I actually remember being potty trained and why I hated it. 1. It was cold and hard to sit on. 2. Having it out in the open felt very exposed. What helped was lining it with toilet roll and having it in the bathroom.

She's too young! Deal with the nappy rash and leave her be. Timodine from your GP and a combination of Metanium/Sudocrem always worked for mine. And maybe get a child seat for the toilet when you try again rather than a potty.

That age isn't too young. She may not be ready, or she may well be. I trained mine at that age successfully with going straight into the toilet. Didn't even buy a potty.

She’s too young if she’s not ready. Bully for you! Your medal is in the post 🙄

@Runnerinthenight

Christ someone's touchy! If you are able to read, I said she may not be ready. But that age group in GENERAL isn't too young. Much like being in nappies at 3 isn't too old.

No need for a medal, but thanks for the offer.

I always notice that people who have children in nappies at a later age always seem to get offended at the fact other parents have children trained at an earlier age. Much like yourself.
