Constipation, 22 month old

Sorry if wrong forum but

My 22 month old has always been prone to constipation if he's had a lot of carbs or not eaten as well as usual (after holidays for example). He usually has a couple of days back on normal diet with a couple of prunes each day or Ella's pouches prunes.

He was quite constipated over Christmas and since then hasn't gone back to normal. He poos every day but small amounts, not 'pebble like', quite soft and smelling quite bad. He is visibly distressed when trying to poo and often cries, goes red and says 'tummy ache.'. It's really sad to see.

We've tried a couple of weeks with lactulose, then stopped at advice of pharmacist as apparently it stops working after a while (it didn't make much difference). We have used glycerin suppositories 3 or 4 times which are effective but he gets very very upset when he poos and then it's back to how it was before,

Diet is quite good, he eats fruit every day and we mix vegetables into his usual food. I try to get him to eat lots of fibre, he's active and drinks a fair amount of water

I'm thinking about taking him to the gp as pharmacist said we can try movicol but it's prescription only.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice or experience either way this? I hate seeing him so sad when he's trying to go!

Thanks!

The beginning is meant to say after normal diet and prunes he goes back to normal

You need to go back to the GP and get movicol. Look on the ERIC website too.

I've had years of constipation with one of mine. We all go just fine, apart from my youngest. I found something that really works well, califig syrup. I put a tea spoon in a yoghurt/kefir every day, and we've had no trouble since. Hope it works for your little one too.

Go to the GP and get movicol. They'll be happy to do it. Worked really well for my Ds about the same age.
He got badly constipated and then worried about going after that. The movicol really helped and just made it easy for him to go.

My mother was obsessed with me going every day. I think it was expected at that time. I remember having syrup of figs and eventually liquorice powder,, which was foul. No problems now. I was much more relaxed with my own children.

Thanks everyone, I'm not sure it even counts as constipation as he does do a bit an each day. But he's just straining so hard.

I'll try to gp next week for the movicol!

We've had one child on movicol for years, it's horrible and difficult to get them to drink it. Califig is much better mixed with their favourite yoghurt.
