Right way to potty train

Hi all

Looking for your expertise in this area please. Everything I read online is either vague or confusing.

My DS is nearly 2 and half so we've decided to start potty training. We're day 3 so all very new.

I want to do it right so all tips welcome.

We've had naked time (particularly in this lovely weather) had several wees on the potty and toilet (with seat).

Also had a couple of wee accidents and one poo accident. He seems to save pooing until he has his nappy on for sleep time.

How can I ensure this is a nice experience for him?

He sometimes says 'no potty' so we then leave it and other times he loves being on it. When he goes to the toilet on it, we do lots of praise and when he doesn't we say ' no worries next time/later'.

No issues when he has an accident. I keep it calm etc.

I've put toys in the bathroom to play with too but thought I'd ask if you have any other tips.

He's with a childminder 3 days a week so I'm heavily reliant on her too. She says she's onboard so hoping she'll really help.

I would say if it's hard work and there's lots of accidents it's too soon. We tried no nappy and it didn't work so stopped for a few months then tried again with pull ups and he was dry within a week. He was 3.5. 2 seems very young to me but lots of babies are dry at that age, good luck!

There is no right way to be honest it very much depends on your specific child. I have twins the same age as your son. My girl twin decided she wanted out of nappies so we potty trained over the summer - my boy twin isn't interested so I'm not pushing it and probably won't for 6 months

I also have an older child who potty trained largely over a weekend but I left her until she was 3.

I generally prefer to be led by my child - so I don't decide for her when is the right time to do it - I've found it's so much quicker and less stressful that way. It's the only time the kids are allowed juice really - fill them up on juice as you can reliably say that they'll want a wee 20 mins later and a good amount so they start to understand what a full bladder feels like and start muscle control to hold it long enough to get to a potty/toilet

Lots of praise - maybe even bribery or two 😂

Thanks for your input. I think this is where I'm trying to figure out exactly what 'too many accidents' is?

We had one wee and one poo accident yesterday. I caught a wee before it started and then he proceeded to happily pee on the potty. There was no distress with the poo incident.

I personally think 3.5 seems quite late. I know each child is different though.

Thank you. I've heard girls are easier to take to it than boys. My DS has always been a bit late to the party bless him.

It was so funny he was asking for more drinks on Sunday just so he could pee again on the potty.

I did a bit of old school bribery, chocolate buttons, one for a wee, two for a poo. Didn't introduce toilet til potty was well established.

Ha my son loves his treats so that would definitely work. Might need to get some special treats in the house.
