So we've had the potty out for ages. Toddler has been great at going. Wees and poos (just a few) on the potty. Anyway, about three weeks ago I decided to go for it. He was fabulous! Wouldn't poo do I've been putting a pull up on when he needs to go and we've been working on that. Anyway yesterday and today we've been out and he's said he's scared to use the toilet when we're out. I even took a toilet seat for him to use but no. So he had an accident today. That's fine but where do I go from here? He just says he's scared. He looks at the toilet and says no and gets hysterical. But he's fine at home?!

what do u use when out? We had a porta potty (basically bag with seat), lo didn’t really like it so he often watered the car tyres…
is it peoples/family houses or public toilets? (Which can smell and be nasty)

How old is he? I tried a couple of times with ds but he just didn't really understand what was going on and was distressed when he had an accident. So I waited until he was 3 (I was a teacher and he was in full time nursery, so there were only 3 opportunities a year for us to give it a proper go). By then he understood the concept of 'now', 'in a minute', 'soon', 'yesterday','tomorrow' so I knew he could manage the idea of linking a physical sensation to predicting what would happen imminently. He started the day using the potty; by lunch time he wanted to use the 'big toilet' standing up for wees and was happily aiming at Rice Krispies floating in the pan. I had a step and a plastic toilet seat for sitting down jobs. He was dry at night straight away too.
If he's still quite young, just wait and go at his pace. If he's a bit older, what about spreading a pull-up or nappy in the potty for him to go in, rather than physically putting it on him?
Good luck!

We've been using toilets in coffee shops or anywhere available when we've been out. We went to the forest yesterday and he wouldn't wee In a bush or up the tree etc. he's been doing it for ages now and all of a sudden he doesn't want to.
I did take a toilet seat for him yesterday after the day before was a bit funny but he wouldn't go on that either. I think my only other option is a portable potty.
@MrsCratchitstwiceturneddress he's been dry in the day for several weeks now and has been happy to go to the toilet elsewhere and tells me he needs to go etc and can hang on until we get to a toilet. But he's scared to go for some reason.

Bless him. He hasn't got an infection that might be making it painful, has he? Does he hold it and hold it to try to put off going or is it just that he really doesn't want to use an unfamiliar toilet?

GoodVibesHere · 12/08/2023 21:34

Have you tried using the toilet first yourself so that he sees you/Dad do it and sees that it is 'safe'.

Allhailkingcharlie · 12/08/2023 21:50

@MrsCratchitstwiceturneddress I don't think so. As soon as we're home he's back to using it fine. He's just suddenly gone off going outside of home. I might just put him in a pull up when we go out and see what happens. I don't want to set him back but not sure what else to do. I don't want to make him more hysterical.

@GoodVibesHere I did do that yesterday. Well hubby did. He still said no. I think I'll just put a pull up on him and just keep encouraging him until he feels ready.

I wouldn't put him back I pull ups, that could set him back at home as well. You'll be sending mixed messages. Stick to the seat for now or take the potty, and get a potette to keep in the car for the future!

Really handy, even as they get a bit older for emergencies!

Been out today and he's said he's scared of the dryer. So at least we know what's causing it now. We went to a toilet and said there was no dryer and I kept showing him. It worked and he did a wee!!!!
