LG now turned 2yr. Started potty training this week. I understand it’s very early days and im not expecting too much but having never done this before I’m just looking for some advice/tips.

I feel that she is ready. She will tell us when she has weed/pooped, she will ask for us to change her bum when she is wet/soiled. We have slowly introduced the idea watching videos/reading books about potty training outing dolls etc on potty.

She is more than happy to sit on the potty Infact she will ask sometimes and it actually can be hard to get her off it when she’s on it she seems to enjoy sitting on the potty however she will not pee/poop in it atm. Over the 3 days we’ve had only 1 wee in the potty the rest on the floor/in nappies πŸ˜….

Now I’m not looking to β€œboot camp” her as staying in the house for days on end doesn’t work for us so I’m happy to take it slow. We are still using nappies in between due to her having accidents in between and are just trying to ask her to use the potty regularly but we seem to miss the perfect time and she’s already gone in her nappy. Just looking for some tips and advice really is this normal? Should we carry on and something will click eventually? Tia 😊

If there’s no change 3 days in, she’s not ready.

when they’re fully ready by the end of day 3 you should be having more potty less accidents.

keep the potty out, let her play with it, let her watch you, keep talking, but stop training for now.

try again in about 6 months.

I'd leave it for now, try again when she's older.

Honestly wait until she’s ready. When Dd was ready I didn’t have to do any training at all. It took less than a day, and she was in nursery the next day and has never had an accident.

Absolutely no benefit to either of you in rushing it, it’s just causes stress. Just wait!

Is it confusing her to be in and out of nappies? Wait until you have a long weekend free and its warm (Aug bank hol?). Nappies and pants off and running around at home. More straight forward than trying to understand when she can and can't wee.

Start off right away with the toilet not the potty. Get a loo seat that fits for kids and a step up. So much easier as there’s no cleaning of the potty. Also your child sees you on the loo and copies you. It helps when you are out as well because your child can learn to hold onto the side of the loo or you can take foldable kids loo seat with you. Just get some pants with cartoon/film characters on and say how about using the loo from now on. Let them think it over and make it just normal and no big deal. Not having to clean out the potty is really a good bonus.

She's only just two? She's too young, have a break and try again in a few months.

They're ready when they're ready. You can either spend the next year trying to potty train and dealing with the faff, or you can wait until it's relatively easy - she'll most likely be dry at the same time either way.

I've potty trained five kids.

One of mine was ready at that age she announced no more nappies mummy and that was it. It's only ever taken 4 days for me. But apart from dd2 they were all closer to 3 or over 3.

Ime once you make the decision to do it stick with it for 3 days if at the end of 3 days no progress forget it.

Get rid of the nappies. Once they are gone they are gone apart from nap times. Don't use pull ups.
It just confuses them.
Yes you are stuck in for a few days but then it's done.
Naked from waist down for first day or so.
Character pants. Less likely to pee on chase from paw patrol.
Obviously loads of praise and a chocolate button if they manage it.
If you see it coming out whip the potty under them and say yay well done it went in the potty especially in the very early days.
A few pottie in different rooms helps.

If they've not been for a bit get them (bribe them if needs be) and read a story or watch their favourite programme.

@troppibambini6

Thank you for that advice it’s actually really helpful. Opposed to just telling me I’m wrong πŸ˜…

Yes she’s not long 2 but I feel she’s definitely ready following a lot of research into signs of readiness. She is actually quite advanced for her age development wise.

we have 5 days coming up in between nursery days which I can dedicate to just focus on the potty training so will postpone until then and try your advice and ditch the nappies all together. Will try for the 5 days and if no progress I will leave it a month or so.

thank you

FWIW, my DD was just over 2 when she was trained - first day, equal distribution of potty events and accidents. Next day, more wins and by the third day, she had got it. I followed the Troppibmabini6 method and would have stopped if she wasn't getting it. Didn't even try with DS until he was nearly 3 and he had one accident, was so disgusted by it that he never had another one. This is the boy who had his own hoover in his room as a teenager! πŸ˜‚

I'd agree with this. I potty trained my dd 4 months ago and she only has a nappy at bedtime. We ditched them in the day from the word go.

I attempted to potty train her when she turned 2 years and it was a disaster. I held off for a few more months and the change was astonishing. It was so, so easy. Day 1 and 2 were very wet and day 3 onwards, she was dry. She rarely has accidents now and if she does, it's because she doesn't want to stop playing her game.
