How do you potty train?!

I admit I hadn't given this much thought yet, but DC has just turned 2 and is suddenly showing an interest. However, it's intermittent and sometimes they don't seem bothered at all.

But, I just don't know how to do it! They sometimes say "wee" and want to sit on the loo or potty, but rarely actually goes. We've had two occasions when they've sat on the potty completely independently and unprompted and did a wee, but half an hour later they did a massive wee on the floor!

This morning DC took their nappy off while I was in the shower and pee'd in their playpen (I put them in the playpen outside the open bathroom door with some books), then wee'd on the sofa while I was trying to clear up. They did then ask to sit on the loo and did a little wee, but it was obviously after the event!

I've heard of just letting them run around without a nappy on, but are you not just clearing up accident's constantly?!

I feel they're not quite ready to identify when they need to go in time, but clearly has an interest.

I am finding it hard attempting to clear up all the accidents and keeping things clean, and stop DC playing in it/causing mischief!

Any tips please?! Thank you

Not if they are in the garden and on a hard floor away from soft furnishings.

They also need a potty that's easily accessible to them so you need at least two.

I’ve just recently potty trained my little one and it’s going really well. This is how we went about it …

She had a potty in the house from around 16 months old and had sat and weed on it on and off but I just new she wasn’t quite ready to fully commit, until recently, I decided to give it a go properly, mostly because -
Her communication skills are very good
She can follow instruction
She can tells us when she has had a wee or a poo
She enjoys independence
I cleared 3 days where we were at home with no pressure, bought a potty and a toilet seat adjuster.

Took the nappy off, left them off all day, and was on her like a hawk, the potty was always within close reach, not in an entirely different room. Expect accidents ! Try to spend most time on floor that’s not carpeted, cover up soft furnishings, don’t confused by putting nappy back on. Get a sticker chart and reward every time they go, talk about it, read books about it.
Day 1 we had lots of addicents, day 2 still accidents but not as many, day 3 barely any accidents, 3 weeks on maybe 1 accident.

Expect pooing to take longer and also nighttime potty training as that is more development than anything else.

first and foremost, you child needs to be able to communicate to you, in order to have success with it. If it’s not working, causing stress resistance etc, put nappy back on and try again in a few weeks or a month.

just to reiterate, there were plenty of times when my lo sat on the potty and weed, at one point she went for a wee every night before bed for about 2 weeks but I just new she wasn’t fully ready, don’t rush, google signs of readiness, that’s definitely half the battle.
