What to do when out and about

Hi, my DD is 2 and we bought a potty last week as she was showing signs of being ready to potty train. We haven't pushed it, but she's started going for wees on it and today did a number 2. I wasn't really expecting her to be this interested this soon, so I feel a bit unprepared tbh! I assume she's seen other kids in nursery using the potty and wants a piece of the action!
What do people normally do when out and about? Should we just hold her over a big toilet if she asks to go? I'm worried that might freak her out vs the potty, but don't know what else we should do?
Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Buy a Carry Potty to use when out and about. It's great she's taken to it well.

My DS is also 2 (2 years and 2 months) but I'm not sure he's ready yet. He says wee and poo but not beforehand, just afterwards sometimes.

I second the carry potty - my 3 year old still uses it if we get caught short somewhere without a loo. Depending on whether she's just turned 2 or nearly 3 she may struggle to let you know in time to get to a loo so they're really useful for a quick emergency! But otherwise yeah I sort of squat on the floor and hold her over the loo so she doesn't fall in! Some places have those toddler trainer seats if it's a soft play for example. May be worth getting one of those for home too and a step so she can climb up to the loo herself.

We have a stool and toddler seat that goes on the toilet at home and started to encourage DS to use the toilet instead of the potty (some bribery was involved at first). Now he just uses the toilet at home.

So now he’s used to the toilet I just hold him on the toilet when we’re out. I thought he wouldn’t be keen but he just accepted it.

Also I wouldn’t necessarily expect them to “ask” to use the toilet, especially when out, it’s more a case of you thinking it’s going to be time soon and taking them to the toilet.

I used to take a potty out in the bottom of the buggy and sit them on it when they said they needed to or I could tell they needed to.

It wasn't ideal but its not for long.

I do remember trying jeans on in Next changing rooms and DS1 doing a poo on the potty and a very kind sales assistant disposing of it for me in their staff toilets. 😍

For dc1 holding over a big toilet was fine. Dc2 didn't like it at all so got a folding toilet seat which has been great.

Thanks so much everyone! So I've just bought a carry potty off Amazon and will also get a trainer seat to so we're prepared for when she's interested in the actual toilet. At what point do you try using knickers? She's not telling us when she needs a wee, but I assume she is aware that she needs to go, since she's doing it on the potty?? She deffo lets us know when she needs a number 2 😂 usually very loudly!

We have a folding toilet seat to take out. If you can get them using the big toilet then I think that’s a lot easier than having to take a potty with you everywhere. I don’t see the point in the travel potty tbh- stay home for the first couple of days to nail it then when you’re out make sure to visit the loo every 1-2 hours so they don’t ever get to the point where they urgently need to go. I found they started to initiate at home quite quickly but when out it’s more here’s a toilet so go now because it’s convenient. Even still with my 6YO a lot of the time not because she can’t hold it but for example there are no loos on the tube so it’s important to go first. Re knickers- we did maybe 2 days of running around naked then into pants without issue.

Right? Deserves a medal.

We had a Potette travel potty - can be used as a potty or the legs fold out to make it into a toilet seat to use on public toilets.

Travel potty is a good idea. I had one that could be flattened to use as a seat for the toilet or sides folded down and a bag put round it so they could wee / poo into it when out and about.
