Abandon after day 2 with only accidents?

DD is 2 years, 2 months. We are on day 2 of potty training today. She only has a shirt on & we have been spending time in the house with potty close by. She has generally been in a good mood with no tantrums.
But the thing is that yesterday we had 14 wee accidents & 1 poo accident. Today has been similar - 8 wee accidents. No real success other than getting one drop in the potty maybe. Pattern is that we remind her that the potty is close by whenever she feels like she needs to wee or poo. Then in a few minutes she’ll start to wee, we spot it & rush her to the potty but it’s too late. We are taking care not to shame her or make a big deal about it. Good thing is that she sits on the potty willingly after we rush her there & stays for a minute or two but can’t seem to let any wee out - mostly because it’s too late & it’s all on the floor. We had planned to train for 3 days straight at home & then woukd continue in nursery after but thinking of abandoning after today and try again in 2-3 months.
She doesn’t seem to be able to tell that she needs to wee just before it comes out, so think she’s just not there. Also don’t want to traumatise her and her to be demotivated about this, although we are very conscious of keeping our tone neutral about accidents.

Thoughts about abandoning now please? Is there anyone here for whose toddler it somehow clicked on day 3 after 2 days of no success? Help please.

I think she's too young sorry.

Thanks, beginning to think the same

"She doesn’t seem to be able to tell that she needs to wee just before it comes out, so think she’s just not there."

^ isn't this a key part of readiness? I have a 2.5 yr old toddler and I always thought they need to be showing signs of telling you when/during/after they pee and poo. I could be wrong though as I have no experience and will only be trying to potty train in the next couple of months! I do know girls are typically ready earlier than boys, maybe give her another 3 months and try again. Good luck!

My grandsons just turned 3 and showing an interest now in using big toilet

It sounds like she's not ready.

When they are ready children are very quick to toilet train. Some children are ready to toilet train early. I have twins who were barely two when they started wearing normal pants but my eldest was bang on three. I’d give it a couple of months and then try again. It’s a good idea to spend lots of time in the garden to reduce flood damage.

Why/how did you decide she was ready? Have you read the NHS website for indicators? Or is it that book?

blisstwins · 06/07/2023 20:02

Very young

megletthesecond · 06/07/2023 20:07

Seriously, just leave it until the autumn, Xmas break (if you're are home) or next spring.
Try pull ups and a toilet trainer seat but don't bother with pants for ages yet. It's not worth the stress.

I had the same experience with my eldest. Left it another couple of months and she got it in two/three days.
Sometimes they just physically aren't ready.
Save yourself the stress and leave it another few months and try again.
You can always leave the potty around - maybe she can have a sit on it before she gets in the bath?

Thank you for responding, that’s what we’ve done.

Good call. It will be so much easier in a few months’ time. Even trying at the end of the summer may be long enough.
