Is he just not ready?

Ds is 2 and a half.
He will tell me if he has weed and sometimes if he has pood, likes to sit on the toilet and understands the concept.

We started potty training yesterday.

First wee on the floor, 3 in the potty and then 1 in a pair of joggers that he insisted I put on.
Poo was done in the nappy that I put on just before bed.
He really didn't like being naked in his bottom half all day but was enthusiastic about the chocolate buttons. I did feel like I spent all day reminding and cajoling him.

This morning he is really not happy about having no bottoms on so is in PJs. No wee so far, despite a fair bit to drink, he seems to be actively ignoring me when I mention the potty, having a wee and even chocolate buttons.
Is he just not ready? Should I leave it or persevere?

Any advice or experience would be really welcome.
Thanks

I think your putting a lot of pressure on yourself so soon. 3 times in the potty on the first day is brilliant. It is an up and down process. Some days you will think they've cracked it then other days they go backwards. It takes time so consistency it key. Have you tried putting a pair of big boy pants on instead.

Give it today and see how it goes. Don't keep pestering - I never understood the approach of making they wee every hour etc - they won't learn how it feels to really need a wee. Let him have a few accidents and then see if that helps him understand when he needs to use the potty/toilet. Don't make a big deal of any accidents just say "oops, next time remember to use the potty" and change him without too much fuss.

If today is a nightmare, you can ask him at bedtime if he'd rather wear a nappy for a bit longer and try pants again at another time.

Oh yes agree he needs actual pants. Ideally of a favourite character who you wouldn't want to wee on! 🤣

It was so much easier with dd. She just decided at 20m that she wasn't wearing nappies anymore and that was that.

It's interesting that pants are being recommended. When dd was potty training, the advice was to leave them bare bottomed for the first few days.

He did really well. Our grandchild, just a few months older, is, a month of persistence, praise and sticker charts on, is still having the occasional accident when tired or excited. Expect it will be another month before he’s reliable. Stick with it.

The bare bottom bit worked for us too. He sounds ready, I'd keep on going.

I didn't remind either of mine to go, just kept them close to potty and stayed around in case they needed help.

Agree that 3 in the potty is very good for day 1!

Poo took months longer for us, they'd always do it in nighttime diaper.

Pfffff. Just writing this makes me realize I DO NOT miss those days.

Godspeed.

Haha. Thank you.
It's not my favourite thing to do.

Thanks all so much for the advice. I will percervere today and see how we get on.

He still hasn't had a wee at all yet today, despite drinking over a pint in milk and water since getting up.
He's happily sat on the potty watching TV but I don't want to just leave him there for too long as I don't think it actually teaches them to use the toilet.

Just to thank you all for the encouragement to keep going.

He's done really well for the last two days. He prefers the big toilet to the potty so we have been using that instead. Couple of accidents but he has told me when he needs to go a few times and has been able to hold it until I can get him upstairs.
He is still bare bummed as the accidents seem to happen when I put joggers on so we'll stick with this for a few more days.

And just as I typed that... He peed on the floor. 🤦
