Poo success stories/advice?!

DS is 2 yrs 3 months. We started potty training 5 weeks ago and he got the hang of wees straight away. He's really struggling with poos. He holds it in, when he's desperate he might occasionally make it to the toilet at the last minute or he'll poo in his pants. He's started holding it until he wearing his nappy at night, we then have to wake him up after bedtime to change him or he poos in it in the morning as soon as he wakes up.

in the day when he needs to poo he asks to go to the toilet but as soon as he gets there either refuses to sit on the seat or sits on and then wants to get off straight away.

Has anyone experienced similar and how did it improve/end? Would really like any tips and also success stories! I dont think going back to nappies is the answer.

Weve tried:

  • poo goes to pooland app
  • reading books about poo
  • letting him see us poo every day
  • giving him chocolate buttons for weeing or pooing on potty/toilet
  • offering potty and toddler seat on toilet, think he prefers the toilet
  • being very low pressure about it, gently suggesting the toilet if he seems upset but hardly mentioning it (outside from indirectly through books etc. He likes the books and the app)
  • putting a nappy back on him for a poo (he just acts the same way as in pants when we do that)
  • giving him privacy- hiding the potty where he used to poo in his nappy, leaving him on the potty/on toddler loo seat and then making an excuse to leave the room

Thanks.

What do you do when he is on the potty? One of mine was more reluctant to poo on the potty and I just used to sit next to them and read a book (nothing to do with poo or toilets training) to them to try and get them to relax.

@FlippyFloppyShoe thanks for replying. Hes fine on the potty- in the early days we did a bit of reading books/watching TV while he's on it but he was never reluctant to sit. We don't do that now, he just sits, pees and gets up again. He won't sit for long if he needs a poo, weve tried sitting him and putting ipad on etc but he always gets up.

The problem isn't the potty, its that he doesn't want to poo, I think he doesn't like the feeling. I've seen the ERIC advice to cut a hole in a nappy etc but as he will no longer poo in a nappy (unless alone in bed) it won't work for us.

You need 'poo toys'! Yep, we bribed our ds with the promise of Schleich dinosaur figures to get him to go in the potty, it was our last resort as we'd also tried everything else. We'd buy a couple of dinosaurs and place them so that he could see them but not reach them and told him that if he managed to poo in the potty he could have them, but if he poo-ed in his pants again they would be taken away. It worked a treat, within the week he was happy to go in his potty, and can I just say that this was a child who would run around the living room holding onto his bottom in total distress at the thought of pooing without a nappy. It really helped him to focus on something while doing his business and snapped him out of the irrational thoughts around pooing without his nappy. He's a teenager now and recently sold his 'poo toy' collection for a very healthy price! 😁😁. Good luck!

We had similar issues with our daughter who was about the same age. She was at nursery full time so I asked their advice. They were super laid back about it and said that it is really common for kids to get the hang of pooing later the wees. Their advice was just to chill about it and not worry at all. This seemed super frustrating as I wanted to "do" something. But it seemed to work and after a few weeks it just clicked with her
