Potty training and poop

Just seeking general advice please - just started potty training DS who is 3 but prior to this over recent weeks he has had quite loose poos. We can’t really recall the last time his poo was solid. Some days worse than others but it’s really hard to work out why. He was quite sick over Xmas so we wondered if it’s a lingering effect from that. It’s possible he’s intolerant to something but there’s nothing new in his diet and I haven’t managed to get a GP appt to discuss it. He has no other symptoms at all.

His nursery have pointed this out before and we’ve discussed it but as he had no other symptoms like a high temp they’ve always been ok for him to stay.

This week we are potty training because he didn’t want a nappy on any more, started at the weekend. On Monday he had a good day at nursery, just 2 wet accidents and did a poo on the potty (which I assume was it’s usual consistency) so we were really pleased as on Sunday he had done a poo in his pants at home.

Yesterday I get a call from nursery saying he has done 2 loose poos in his pants and I need to pick him up because it’s “like diarrhoea”. They’d just bagged the pants up so when we got home I cleared them all up for washing and one poo was in fact not that loose (although the other one was).

So firstly any advice on where to go from here?! I don’t even know where to start with identifying what might be causing it and it feels drastic to cut things like gluten or lactose out of his diet when he is totally fine apart from slightly loose poo?!

Also I get it’s really rubbish for nursery but they did offer to help with potty training as I’m sure they have done for many other kids. DS is at home today and tomorrow still having some success but some accidents - but he’s due to go back Friday and I can’t keep him off for ages when he’s totally fine. I also don’t really want to go back to pull ups unless I really have to as it feels like a step backwards.

I just find it frustrating that his poo wasn’t an issue for nursery when he was in nappies and it’s likely he will at some point have another poo accident - and I can’t really keep having him sent home when he isn’t sick?! Or am I being unreasonable?!?!?

I think in your position I would talk to the GP before cutting anything out of his diet, and see if there's any kind of food intollerance screening available.

Does anyone in your family have intollerances to anything?

No nothing runs in the family. I agree I don’t want to cut anything out his diet but I also can’t even get through to the GP on the phone to make an appt 🤦‍♀️
