5.5 DD Still in Bedtime Nappy Pants

cooper82 · 30/01/2023 21:40

My DD is amazing. She’s learning and growing in every way, I’m very proud.
My DD has at times asked to go to bed with pants on instead of nappy pants but without fail, she just sleeps through the need to pee and wets herself. I’ve heard this is only really treated as a “problem” when they are 7 so perhaps we still have to wait it out.
I can’t help but think we should be trying ways for DD to learn to hold in a pee at bedtime. Or at least, go to the loo in the night.
Any advice would be appreciated!

My DD is 6, we lift her at 10pm and 3am, initially she was often still wet then she started waking naturally around 10 but still needed guiding to the loo (she was half asleep!) We got to the point where she was dry more nights than wet with this, and we're now at the point that I'm so tired that sometimes I sleep through my 3am alarm and she can still be dry in the morning! Other times she's still wet but we're definitely making progress. She was under the bowel and bladder team for different issues when she was younger and the thing I've learnt is there isn't an instant fix, if something doesn't happen naturally it will take time and perseverance! (On the other hand my youngest decided at nearly three that she didn't need nappies and has never wet the bed! They're all different)

Thought I would share an update on where we are. DD is 3 months from 7 years old and is now taking Desmopressin. She's been on it for about 2 month and I must say, I had hoped it would help but alas, DD is still waking up with a wet nappy. Dr has advised to keep taking the med for another month and if there is no sign of improvement, they might double the dose.

Did you try an alarm in the end?

WhatwouldRuthdo · 21/03/2024 06:35

Another vote for giving the alarm a try. DS is 6.5 and was wetting a pull-up every night. Although we were breezy about it with him, he was getting self-conscious and cross about wearing pull-ups. Discussed the alarm with him and he asked to give it a go. A week of nightly alarm calls, then a couple of times a week. It’s been 2 months and we are down to an alarm once every 2-3 weeks.

spudnik1 · 21/03/2024 06:40

We used a wetting alarm . He was 6 and took 2 go's of the alarm, but he is nearly 9 now and only 1 accident, but he was ill at the time.
We still double up on the waterproof sheets, though 😂 ( waterproof sheet, normal sheet, waterproof sheet, normal sheet)

Bringthejury1 · 21/03/2024 08:22

Another vote for the alarm here too. We used one for my child aged 5 at the time and it took a couple of weeks but she's been many months dry at night now. It's worth a go if the medication doesn't seem to be working.

cooper82 · 15/04/2024 18:01

We've avoided the wet alarms as I always thought as it was hormonal, the alarm wouldn't help. But with so many people suggesting it, it can't help. What is a good wet alarm to go for?

This is what we used, it’s an alarm but you get more than that in terms of videos. It was brilliant, don’t get me wrong it’s loud and it was hard but after 2 weeks we were done and our DS never had a wet night since.

It’s not always as simple as waiting for the hormone and there are things you can do

OP we have a similar issue. DS is 7.5, takes desmopressin and Oxybutynin but still soaks through every night. Our paediatrician has advised that a wetting alarm probably wouldn’t work for him, and suspects his bladder is dysfunctional and needs ‘stretching’ and strengthening to be able to hold overnight.

Sending you support - it’s a hard journey to be on.

cooper82 · 06/09/2024 21:02

I’m at the point where trying wet alarms is the only thing left to try.
I see someone suggesting this alarm and just wondered if others have tried other ones to understand the good vs not so good.

Im in the same boat. Mine is 6 and still wearing night nappies and no one see,s very concerned. She has friends at school doing the same.

we’ve tried twice for weeks at a time to switch to pants, put her on the toilet at 11, had a go then and still did it hours later, etc

im an immigrant to the uk and in my country all, but absolutely all children are toilet trained at 2, same time for night and day nappies. I know this for a fact as I have many nephews and nieces and other friends kids, I’ve slept in their houses etc.

because here people here are so lax about it, “do t worry, it’s hormones etc “ I wonder if I didn’t miss a critical time at 2

in my country it’s very simple, they put the child on the toilet around 10-11 before they themselves go to sleep and that’s it. A few weeks later, after some accidents, ofc, the child is toilet trained

my sister was shocked mine is not toilet trained yet and it’s not considered such a bad thing in uk

at this point she doesn’t want to forefoot her nappies, what do I do? I don’t want to give her medicine, do t want to force her into pants, how long, still, do I wait

i have a 2nd DD and you bet she’s going to be toilet trained at 2 for both day and night

CristinaNov182 · 10/09/2024 23:57

I should say that the first time we tried she was already 4… I so regret listening to people here to give her time, that she will “naturally “ stop peeing in her nappies

cooper82 · 18/01/2025 20:29

Nearly 3 years since I posted this and DD is still in nappy pants for bed.
she’s 7.5 now. Is anyone else’s child still in nappy pants at this age?

Purplevioletsherbert · 18/01/2025 21:45

DS is 8 and we’ve had to move from nappy pants to tenas because they just weren’t absorbent enough. He’s on Desmopressin and oxybutnin, under a consultant AND community nursing bowel and bladder team.

He’s old enough to find it embarrassing now and especially as we are both scouts and have frequent camps and sleepovers. My heart is breaking for him!

Littlehouseinthebigcity · 18/01/2025 22:50

We've taken 2 steps forward and 3 steps back so many times, and we're still in pj pants at night!

pimplebum · 18/01/2025 22:55

Same here
5.5 and never done a poo on the toilet incontinent of poo
and nappy at night
wets himself occasionally
we have used puppy training pads as cheaper than ones for kids

Are you in England at all?? We’ve not had Oxybutnin either. No suggestion of a bladder nurse either. We are in Scotland

Yep I’m in England. The bladder and bowel nursing team is under our community paediatric service, where he sees a few specialists for other things too. And the consultant was because I asked the GP for a referral two years ago. They prescribed the oxybutnin

cooper82 · 21/01/2025 20:49

How did you get access to a bowel and bladder nursing team out of interest? And how have you found there support to assist DS out of nappy pants?

My DD just takes it in her stride at the moment. She’s had a few sleep overs and it doesn’t phase her which is great. It’s more me as she’s such an amazing little girl, I just didn’t expect her to still be in NPs at this age.

Two year waiting list through our community paediatric clinic! My DA has adhd and autism so was already on their books so I mentioned at an appointment that I’d like him referred. I think if I remember correctly we had to go through school nursing first and then when their advice wasn’t enough it got escalated.

We only had our first appointment last Friday! But so far he has had one dry night since then so I’m hopeful that the additional schedule she’s given for drinking enough and daytime toileting will help. He’ll be starting one sachet a day of movicol this weekend too to help any constipation that might be putting pressure on his bladder.

HLM1989 · 01/01/2026 21:06

@cooper82 how is the situation now? My 5.5 year old still soaks through nappies so feeling your despair!

cooper82 · 01/01/2026 21:58

We’re still in the same position now. DD is 8.5 years old. 😢

we’ve been passed between the school nurse, the GP and a specialist dept

DS will be 10 in a few weeks. Up till October just gone, so nearly a year older than your DD now, he was still wetting 4-5 times a week. Then he just stopped. It's been maybe 7 times in nearly three months. It could still just happen.

cooper82 · 02/01/2026 09:19

It’s something I don’t think is spoken a lot about. My DD is fine with the situation, but I never thought she’d be still in nappy pants at bedtime at 8.

We’re back trying the wet alarm again to see if that helps.

I never thought my DD would still be in nappy pants at 9, but she's perfectly happy about it and I'm not going to rush her.
