How to teach toddler to push pants down

Hi, we potty tried DS at 18 months (now 20 m). He picked it up within a couple of days and made the connection between pee/poo and the potty. At home he doesn't wear pants and will walk to the potty and use it then say "mama/dada pee/poo" and we will walk with him to the toilet to empty it (we clean the bowl). When we are out of the house he is in nappies but we regularly check if he needs the potty and if he says yes take him to an adult toilet and hold him on it and he will use it. At nursery they apparently check with him and put him on it (they also do this if he stands by it and points) as I have asked them too (so he his wet bag has 2 nappies from an 8 hour nursery day (reusable nappies)).

We have been trying to teach him to push his pants down (bought training pants) when he needs the potty but he struggles (can pull them up) and he seems to forget sometimes that even if he is wearing a nappy or pants that he still needs to use the potty. I think in his head, if he is bottomless then he knows and will always use the potty (this is only at home obv) but if out forgets unless we ask him. Does anyone have any tips? Thank you!

Make it part of a game that you play (separate to using the potty) with putting on and taking off different items of clothes. Be a bit silly about it. You join in. Essentially it's just practice makes perfect but if you make it a game they can practice multiple times in a short period of time and have fun doing it.

I would use elastic waist joggers and no pants while he gets the hang of getting the trousers down, then add pants in later

Can he fully dress himself? No - then don't be surprised he has difficulty getting his pants and/or trousers off, on or both.

Also normal underwear e.g. pants are easier for toddlers to get on and off than pull ups and training pants as they have less elastic in them.

He just needs to play - so practice - taking his clothes on and off. He may then randomly run around naked, and put all or some of his clothes on back to front.

He will get there but until he does you need to help him go to the toilet.

Seen it with my nephews and nieces plus my own DD who potted trained before 2.

Thank you - all v helpful! We will keep going. He can only put his trousers and socks on (sometimes backwards lol). The nursery staff are hit and miss with helping him to the potty. It's not a massive nursery but busier than where he was before. I just worry that as they are not as on it that he will get confused (obv I know they are busy). Thanks again
