Scenario this evening:

Almost 3 year old DS hasn't done a poo all day. Was then farting (sorry if TMI) so put him on the toilet to try and do a poo.
He's been doing wees on the toilet for 6 months now and is yet to do a poo.

Sat on the toilet, nothing.

He then came into the kitchen 10 minutes later, walking strangely - as if he had done a poo in his boxers. No sign of it, but figured it must be on its way so put him again on the toilet.

He was farting and it was obvious he needed to poo. He even let the tiniest little fart out and it followed through with a teeny trickle of poo. But we had tears, and he said he couldn't do it.
Waited with him on the toilet for over 30 minutes before I felt terribly bad and took him off the toilet.

Put a pull up on him when he got off and within 5 minutes, he's poo'd.

What can I do? Feeling really deflated at the minute.

My very best advice is don’t make a big deal of it. When he does go in his pull-up take him to the toilet (I used to stand my dd on there) and tip it down, wipe, then get him to flush and wash hands. Say small, encouraging things and it will come. They all move at their own pace and if it becomes a big deal it just builds anxiety and can cause toileting issues.

Why has this thread been posted twice?

Odd.

Yes. This really is something you can't control, he has to be able to relax and do it in his own time.

This is great advice.

What do you mean by a "small trickle of poo"? If that is an accurate description, I'd also take your DS to the GP to discuss possible constipation, which would make toilet training more challenging u til it is resolved.

Put him on the potty with a nappy/pull up lining it. It’s the ‘drop’ they don’t like.

Yes, that does suggest constipation, but I think I'd wait and see if that happens again, stressing the child with a gp visit could be very counterproductive.
