When did you all start potty training and how did you go about it?
First time mum and don't want to screw this up for my LO and want try and make it as plane sailing as possible (by firstly being prepared!)
Also anyone recommend any potties for boys?

Pourty was worth the buy!

I didn't "train" at all, I was very lazy.

Well I say that but we had been given some potties that hung about in the bathroom. Around 2-2.5 he'd sit before a bath and occasionally a wee would come out. And then some celebrations! Didn't happen all the time, was just an occasional thing.

I also started at some point to talk about why I was sitting on the toilet so he got an idea. I let him flush it.

But I really couldn't do "training" on either as they'd resist.

In the end the eldest started to hate nappies, especially at night, so we tried pants. He was however dry from around 2 (so was youngest) so that worked well. He didn't move into pants till around 3.5 - we'd tried them occasionally in the house and he could do wees but it wasn't consistent. At 3.5 he was more able to talk about it too. We tried a few days in the summer with pants - feeling a poo really shocked him but he found that hard. You're not supposed to but I did use choc buttons for a while 😬

There was a phase where we put nappies on when out and pants in the house. Then just before term of the last year at nursery he decided himself and did really well.

Youngest was happy to try occasionally but then became completely resistant at home till at 3 and a quarter when his best friend at nursery was getting all the praise and he just decided to wear pants too one day. They'd been asking him to try and he did but he'd started to refuse at home completely from around 2.5. So I was surprised (but he's an own terms kid!)

I'd just bought a massive box of wipes that's still going two years later...

It can depend on the personality of the child - I've known some to be trained by 2 and some still struggling at 5, where it's become a sensitive thing.

I do think just having a try before baths is useful. Only if they're keen. No forcing, just offering.

Around 3 the books are useful especially the ones with a button that makes noises.

Both of mine I started a week before their 2nd birthday. Both took 2 weeks. I put them in a pull up at night until they were reliable sleeping through.

With both my kids so far I've waited for them to show an interest in the toilet. Second child showed no interest until around 26 months then decided he didn't want nappies anymore and had been dry day and night since. Only about 5-6 accidents and no real forcing of training. Found it harder with first as he still drank lots of milk prior to bed so night nappies were harder to stop

Read the 'Oh Crap! Potty training' book!

Depends on the child but don't do it to early. Dc1 and 3 were dry from day 1 of trying aged 2.5 years and within a week dry at night to.
Dc2 was nearly 3 and just wasn't interested, was also not dry overnight till aged 8.
I think wait till they're showing signs, have a potty in the bathroom for them to try, Talk about using the toilet and read about it with them they show you when they're ready.
