DS3 and 3 months.
Has very limited speech but does tend to pick things up quite quickly.
I started potty training at the very beginning of the summer holidays, when i planned on staying home a few days, he clearly wasn't ready so I didn't push. I left the potties around the house so he was used to them being there.
The last week of the holidays, he sat on the potty, naked, while I was dressing him. He then looked confused, looked down and he'd had a wee. I made a huge fuss, we danced around, he got a sticker and thoroughly enjoyed himself. I continued with it for a couple of days but as soon as he had an accident he cried and wanted a nappy on. There were some other changes at home that made him forget the potty.
I now think he's ready to try again. He goes to nursery 5 days a week for 3 hours. It takes around 25 to 30 minutes to walk there and the same back home. Nursery have said that whatever I do at home they will do there (providing it works obviously)
Question is what do I do for the commute there and back? His limited speech means he can't ask to go. I don't want to put a nappy on for the journey which may confuse him and give nursery staff more work to change into pants while he's there.
Not sure if it's relevant but he is awaiting assessment for ASD.
Thanks in advance.

At that age, I’d probably try and go straight to using a child seat on the main toilet rather than a potty. That way he learns a consistent message from day one that the bathroom is where we go to the toilet.

For journeys to/from nursery, could you just use a puppy pad underneath him in the car? That’s what we did with DS, but as it happens he never had any accidents during the commute.

@GiltEdges thanks for the reply, he's reluctant to sit on the toilet, the potties are in the bathrooms and are the chair type.
I don't drive, we've no choice but to walk as the bus service is awful, it would take us just as long to get there and back.

If you’re walking then get a travel potty to take for the journey. We have a potette plus and I think it’s convenient and not too bulky.
Get him to have a try before you leave and then suggest nursery have him try as soon as he arrives. His bladder should be big enough to not need to go for half an hour but you can have a travel potty as backup.
we’ve been using pull-ups for my little boy for times when we’d struggle to manage wet pants (school walk and car journeys), but we used taped nappies before potty training so he’s accepted that these are different and he doesn’t wee in them.

@SBAM I've been using tape nappies too, could be worth trying them just for the journey and take them off in the toilet when he gets there. I'll pick some up. I'm probably overthinking. I just don't want him to have an accident on the way to then show up at the nursery with a wet and upset toddler.

@SBAM forgot to mention, it's a very public walk/busy road on the way so I didn't think of using a travel one. I've got a compact one I planned for days out etc

Would try getting him to go before you leave and I think he’d probably be ok for the journey. We have a similar walk time and they were ok.

We also have a pottete which is great.
