What to do on the school run?!

Planning to have a shot at potty training next week (once biggest is back at school) with my littlest, who is turning 2 this week.
What do I do when it comes to the school run?! Luckily ours is very short, only a few minutes walk and little legs goes in the pushchair still. Do I just put her in the pushchair with a towel under her, just in case?!
I think i'm majorly over thinking it! Surely it's possible to potty train with school runs in the mix?

Travel potty

berksandbeyond · 30/08/2022 10:10

Take a travel potty and shove it in the basket under the buggy?
Same as you do when you're going anywhere surely?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/08/2022 10:10

We used pull ups when out and pants at home.

minipie · 30/08/2022 10:14

Normal potty in buggy basket here. It was only needed a few times. Wee tipped into nearby drain. Thankfully there was never a poo but I guess a dog poo bag would have worked.

We did have a folding travel potty but tbh found a normal potty was better in the potty training stage, for speed of use.

In fact I think the travel potty is still in our car boot… DC are now 9 and 7 😆

LittleMissLaundry · 30/08/2022 10:15

Do a wee/sit on toilet before leaving the house. Bring a travel potty.

If shes only just turning 2 this week maybe consider waiting till spring time, i cant imagine that it will be fun to be faffing with a potty in November weather on the school run.

Heckythump1 · 30/08/2022 10:21

It's more the initial 'training' period i'm worried about.... eldest was able to hold it for ages really quickly, but obviously we didn't have school runs then :P
I shall invest in a travel potty!

If it's only a few minutes I would sit on potty before departure, put on a pull up (I told DS they were potty training pants so he thought they were pants rather than a nappy), remove pull up and potty again when you're back home.

Until she gets used to it she'll probably have an accident in the pushchair otherwise. Mine picked up the wee part quite quickly but poo took a while, I wouldn't want poo all over my pushchair seat!

I would wait till half term if it were me. 2 is still very young and it will be very stressful when on school runs. I can recommend my carry potty. It was fab for us.

PinkPencilCase · 30/08/2022 11:18

I lined the buggy with a puppy pad for a few weeks after potty training until I was more confident there would not be accidents. I think they'd do a better job than a towel. Did the same in the car seat.

Eldest's birthday is at half-term so will be busy then.... I chose next week as none of our usual groups are on until the following week, so it's just the school runs we have to negotiate!

Are you planning to stay in the rest of the time other than the school run?

Probably yes, as our normal groups don't start up again until the following week :)

Don't do it at half term - how boring for the DC1 who will want to be out and about during their break.
Give it a shot this week - it sounds like a good opportunity although DC2 is still young; my experience is that it will pretty quickly become clear whether it's the right time or not. If you're not having any joy after 48hrs, try again in a few months.
If there's no chance of getting someone else to bring DC1 home for first day or two, you're just going to have to cross your fingers, line the buggy with a plastic bag / towel combo (or a puppy pad) and head out. Sit on the loo / potty before you leave (both of you - lead by example!) and take a potty with you.

abovedecknotbelow · 31/08/2022 08:06

We had 'piddle pads' for the buggy and car seats in case of accidents just be use I couldn't be arsed with cleaning and drying them. Dts chose the patterns and were very keen not to wee on their special cushions. A bed mat or puppy pad would work just as well.

if the time is right, you'll be long beyond having to think about potties on the school run by November! Both of mine were pretty reliable by the end of the first fortnight. But I didn't attempt it until they were 2 and a quarter.

minipie · 31/08/2022 14:19

I agree that if they are ready it will be cracked or mostly cracked within 4/5 days. If you’re not seeing clear progress after say 3 days give up and try in a few months.

Suedomin · 31/08/2022 14:24

Does she show signs of being ready? If not then just turning 2 seems a little early.

Russell19 · 31/08/2022 14:27

Cushion inner with plastic bag over it then normal cushion cover on top. Cover can be washed but inner saved from wet. Put cushion in the pushchair just in case!

MsChatterbox · 31/08/2022 14:29

Get an incontinence pad for the pushchair! Wee right before leaving and limit drinks before leaving too. Then travel potty once dropped off older sibling before journey home. You might be surprised. My little one held a wee for 1.5 hours the first time we went out!

SheWoreYellow · 31/08/2022 14:30

Start on Saturday and see how she is by Monday. She may be half cracked it or not getting it at all by then.

Mindymomo · 31/08/2022 14:33

I used pull ups and took them off as soon as we got back and sat my DC2 on potty. I told him if he needed to go in pull up pants it was ok, but try and wait till we got home. He cottoned on really quick and soon was taking them off himself when we got back. Lots of small treats also helped and we had a chart, that when he’d got to 7 days he would get to choose a toy.

She's having her birthday party on Saturday 🤣 I was thinking it might be an idea to start on Sunday though!

I am in pretty much the same situation.
my youngest turns 2 in October but from watching his older brother I think he could be ready and seems keen and I want him to be confidently trained by January when he starts preschool. My eldest potty trained at 2 no problem so I don’t see it as that young.
I think I’m going to start next Wednesday and on the school runs pretty much just pray 🤪 it’s a short walk if any accidents occur.
hope it goes well for you!

Heckythump1 · 02/09/2022 17:33

@Duplocrocs good luck! We've decided to start on Sunday, so we will be 24 hours in already by the first school run... fingers crossed it all goes well!
