My little boy has just turned three and we started potty training last week. I would have liked to start earlier but he was quite delayed with speech and just didn't seem ready.
He doesn't like change but I was pleased that he was happy to ditch the nappy and wear pants. We stayed at home for week and then ventured out but his pattern has been the same. I take the nappy off on waking (around 8am) and then he'll wee at about midday then hold it the whole rest of the day. He has a nappy on at night time and when he wakes it's so full it's leaking.
He was back at nursery on Monday and key worker said he didn't wee until 4pm. And then today he didn't wee all day (8.30am until 5.30pm). He finally let go when I got him home.
He'll sit on the potty but refuses to when he actually needs to go. We've offered stickers, chocolate buttons, rewards chart. I let him choose his potty and pants etc. Read books about potty, watched programmes. I've tried the blowing trick, the turning on water trick etc.
Equally I'm keeping it low pressure and just letting him go in his own time. But he's still holding it.
The key worker thinks we should give up because he'll make himself ill / bladder infection but I don't think we've given it long enough. I emailed a paedritician I know who said it's fine as long as he doesn't have a temperature.
Do I give up or stick it out?
