15 month old won’t sit on potty

I think that my 15 month old is ready for potty training because he tugs at his nappy when he wants to wee or poo. So I’ve tried taking his nappy off and putting him on the potty but he refuses to sit on the potty and ends up going on the floor. I’ve tried demonstrating with teddy bears, I even attempted to sit on the potty myself but he’s still not persuaded. I had somewhat more success at getting him to stand up and wee into the potty but he can’t aim very well.

I know he’s still young but I really want to start potty training as soon as possible. Every time I change his nappy he wriggles out of my grip and runs away. I’m fed up of all the nappy change tantrums too.

He’s too young - sorry!

Wnikat · 21/07/2022 17:11

Too young.

also read up before potty training. Oh Crap is a good method. Making a big deal of sitting on the potty is stressful for everyone and will be counter productive.

EV117 · 21/07/2022 17:14

He’s clearly not ready. And if you carry on as you are he won’t be ready for a long time, you’re going to completely put him off wanting to use that potty.

ChickinMarango · 21/07/2022 17:14

Very, very few would be ready at this age. We started with my girl at 2 years (day after her birthday). A lot of people thought that that was too young.

I’d say follow his lead and at the moment, he isn’t quite there. If you want to continue can you get some pull ups and have him starting to use it as and when he likes? Can you have it out alongside his toys, no pressure for him to get used to? I think ours was out from about 18 months with a few fluke poos.

I agree he sounds too young. Read ‘oh crap potty training’

igglepigglesredblanket · 21/07/2022 17:17

He may not be too young (I've had children in my care potty train around the same age) but he's definitely not ready by your description.
Potty training shouldn't be difficult and shouldn't be a fight, if it is then the child isn't ready, sorry, your at risk of him making negative associations with the potty if you keep going which will make it harder in the long run for you.

Holly60 · 21/07/2022 17:17

You'll know when he is ready because he will start peeing and popping on the potty. If he won't, it's because he isn't ready.

The only other thing you could try before you give up is either letting him watch something he loves or reading him a book whilst he is on the potty.

Otherwise give up for a bit and try again when he is older.

My LO much preferred to be on the toilet with a child seat attached than a potty, saved the transition from potty to toilet as well.

Singleandproud · 21/07/2022 17:20

He may just be recognising the sensation, try some pull ups instead. You can buy childrens urinals or pop a ping-pong ball in the toilet for them to aim at.

Also nappy tantrums at that age are super common, pull ups are the answer here too as you can put them on standing up, tear the sides and clean them up whist the toddler stands up which the seem to prefer.

Unless he can communicate to you verbally that he needs a wee or a poo then he is too young.
The earliest I have ever had a child potty trained was 2 years - and she is very forward in all areas x

perimenofertility · 21/07/2022 17:21

Skip the potty, get one of those special seats that go on your toilet and try there instead. Much easier and he might prefer it because it's the same place you go (that worked in our family).

3luckystars · 21/07/2022 17:25

Too young. Leave it for now.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/07/2022 17:30

Way too young

I'd wait until he's 2.

Gioia1 · 26/07/2022 09:48

Op my daughter never wanted to seat on a potty. I think she didn’t like squatting so low. Someone suggested I buy one of those step potty with ladder that sits in the toilet which I did. Took 4 days and on the fourth day to she took herself and did 1&2. The advantage of the step potty is that they can be taught the whole routine of wiping, flushing and hand washing.
DD Only uses nappy at night and 6 out of 7 nights it’s dry. We started nearly a month ago when she was 19months so maybe try again in a couple of months.

Ilikepinacoladass · 26/08/2022 07:02

I remember lots of nappy change tantrums at that age too, it was a phase which didn't last too long. I'd just wait and concentrate on doing more fun things you'll both enjoy than attempting to get the child to sit on a potty. Mine is 2yr 4 months have just tried a couple of days of it but I don't think he's ready. He's done poo's and wee's on potty now and again since 2 but I just don't think he's got the bladder control yet to go full on nappy free. I really don't understand the rush around it - apparently if you wait later when they're fully ready it only takes a couple of days, rather than stressing for weeks / wasting loads of time thinking about it if you try earlier..
