Hi all, hopefully someone has some advice or words of encouragement… or Gin!

we decided to potty train 2yo (3 next week) DS this weekend, as we had DH at home Thurs Fri & me Sat & Sun.

the first morning, he did a huge wee on the potty after I took his nappy off and he was so pleased! I thought that was a great start, but things have been so hit and miss since!
all poos bar one have been in his pants, and a fair few wee accidents. And when he does go on the potty, he sits there for 15 mins and literally gets a few drops out. He is always so pleased when he does do something on the potty and we always praise him.
But I still don’t think he is getting it. Just 30 mins ago, I took his night nappy off, he had a massive drink of juice so I asked him to sit on the potty. He sat there for 10 mins, told me he had ‘nothing to get out’, so I put his pants on, he went into the kitchen for his breakfast and then peed all over the floor and chair. Then when I had cleaned up, got the rest of the pee out 🙈

i messaged my husband and said i’m so tempted to put him back in nappies, as we aren’t seeing any progress by day 4. My husband said that he isnt going back in nappies because he is doing well, but he has him sit there on the potty to get the smallest drops out.

nursery said they believe he is ready too and he would smash it, but while he sits on the potty there, he hasn’t done anything and I can’t send him tomorrow in pants and have the girls deal with this.
i’m just confused and frustrated, his older sister cracked it in 3 days and I just feel like all i’m doing is cleaning up pee and poop!

is he ready MN? Should I persevere or admit defeat for a bit?

oh Crap method- godsend!

at first no pants, it’s confused for a nappy- keep it off and stay home for a couple of days

ListenLinda · 24/04/2022 07:30

So, he’s just come running upstairs to me, fidgeting about, I asked whats the matter and he said ‘mummy I need the toilet’.

he held it til we got there and did a wee!

I’d say he wasn’t ready. If he was, he’d have h go it it by now. But he now knows the option is there when he feels ready.

We had a very similar experience with DS at 2y8m and stopped trying on the 4th day. 2 weeks later, DS asked to wear pants, and had a 75% hit rate within a couple of days, and was reliably dry for wees and poos, night and day in fortnight. Similar experience with DD, but without the false start- she just asked for pants one day.

@ListenLinda , just seen your update! Kept going!

SkyLarkDescending · 24/04/2022 07:38

I would keep going a bit longer. Try to keep bare bum as much as possible when at home. Nursery are used to dealing with potty training so send him in with plenty of spare clothes.

Both my DD took a week or so to crack the poo's and were happier to use the toilet with a seat on than the potty after a couple of days.

lilyfire · 24/04/2022 07:48

You could also try reading Poo Goes to Pooland with him. Worked like magic for mine.

ListenLinda · 24/04/2022 08:24

Just done his third wee on the toilet! He is currently running around with nothing on his bottom, as all his underpants are in the dryer.

he seems much happier to use the toilet rather than the potty, DD was the same.

i will keep going now, i think the no bottoms is making him more aware.

i need to send him in pants at nursery tomorrow though, but it shouldn’t set him back, should it?

Go, go, go @ListenLinda ‘s DS. You’ve got this.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 24/04/2022 08:55

You are kidding aren't you. It's been 4 days. It was at least a month before DS got the hang of it. And longer for dry nights. And he needs to be bare bottomed. Pants are too confusing.

ListenLinda · 24/04/2022 12:33

@Shehasadiamondinthesky no, My older child had it sussed by day 3, so that’s why I asked for advice.

Ooh @ListenLinda I’ve just started a very similar thread - heartening to read that you are seeing progress!

Rainallnight · 25/04/2022 13:04

Kids are so different - drop any idea of your DD being a yardstick. My two DC were dramatically different in age, approach and speed.

Also, assuming you do most of the childcare and laundry, you get the final say about continuing or not. Not DH looking on from the sidelines, not actually clearing up any poo.

Definitely get rid of the nappies. Way too confusing.

sounds great he’s getting the hang of it but don’t be afraid to park it for a while if you think he’s not ready

ListenLinda · 25/04/2022 13:21

Thank you guys.

real progress yesterday, he was telling me he needed the toilet, he even did a poo on there! Not a single accident yesterday. He woke up at night and told me he needed a wee so I took his nappy off and he went 😊

he is at nursery today, i’ve told the girls he may need reminding every so often but we will see how he gets on today!

He likes saying ‘bye bye wee wee’ as he is flushing the toilet too 😂 hope you have similar success @Battybonkers 😊

Battybonkers · 25/04/2022 13:46

Thanks @ListenLinda so do I, although he just came in and said ‘mummy I’ve done a poo, I’ve left it on the floor for you’ so I don’t have much hope…

ListenLinda · 25/04/2022 13:49

Uh oh 🙈how are you doing with the wees?

OP posts:
Battybonkers · 25/04/2022 14:25

Better - around 50% make it on the potty, less grim to clean up too! Hope nursery goes smoothly for yours today - mine has nursery tomorrow: am going to have to take in ALOT Of spare clothes!

ListenLinda · 25/04/2022 15:17

Fingers crossed for you tomorrow, you never know, nursery may make it click!
