My son will not poo on the toilet!

It's been 2 years of toilet training. He has been doing wee's on the toilet for approx 15 months, but he just refuses to poo on the toilet. He will poo if I put a nappy on him or he does it in his pants. He stands with his legs crossed holding a poo in and will completely deny that he needs one. If I put him on the toilet we could be there for over an hour and he would not do it. He has problems with poo water leaking into his pants from where he holds it in. I have tried the laxatives from doctors, read all the advice on ERIC but we still can't crack it. He stars school in September and at this rate will be pooing in his pants at school.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Don’t put a nappy on! As he’s denying it don’t ask him if he wants to go just guide him to the toilet.

Just persevere. Mine would only poo in pants standing up for ages.
We used toys as a reward in the end. (Had tried stars on reward chart) As soon as he started making the poo face we would start with the encouragement saying if you poo on the potty/toilet you will be able to have new car/train/ chocolate or whatever. Toy cars worked best as he loved them, I think Tesco sold a pack of 5 matchbox type cars for £1.99 so he had one car each poo. As he sat we would tell him he was such a good boy to sit on the toilet, well done sitting on the toilet etc etc. basically just loads of positive encouragement just for getting on there. If it wasn’t coming it was fine, he was still a good boy for trying to poo on the toilet.
It went on for ages but he got there in the end.

Yes agree with @Tasteslikeregret big reward.

But as an aside have you tried going back to a potty? I did this with dd, happily peeing in toilet but holding poo. Potty seems a much more comfy angle for her, she always asks for it, no issue here. She has managed in little toilet at nursery. Just hates sitting on big toilet here for a poo.

Could something like this help? My son hated the drop and splash of doing a poo on the toilet, and this was enough like his potty that it helped him transition.

I think I wrote this EXACT post a year ago.

We found we needed something to distract her from the anxiety about letting go on the loo. We let her have iPad games on the toilet to take her mind off it. It took a couple of months for the accidents to stop but it worked. She's almost 5 now and still asks for the iPad or my phone if she needs to go and we let her although when desperate she has gone a few times without. We haven't had any accidents (apart from due to illness) for about six months now. She always goes at home though, never at school and she takes a while to relax to do it in new places eg on holiday.
Please don't worry, they'll get there!
Still in night pull ups here though and never had a dry one

Thanks for the reply's, we have tried rewards and iPads, going nappyless but ended up with 2 ruined carpets! Trying to persevere and have arranged a chat with health visitor.

My DS was the same. In the end l let him poo in a nappy and he got into a routine of going each evening before bed.

He started school having only just turned 4yrs (August born) still pooing in a nappy.

Then one day l said that the potty was coming out for him to poo in. He said that "big boys use the toilet".... l said to show me.... and he did Confused.

No fuss or drama.... he was just ready at last.
