Ok need advice pls. Boy of almost 4, first born. Language about a year delayed but getting there making great progress etc. he seems ready to toilet train now cos he keeps pulling down his nappy and if we don't catch him in time then going on the floor 🤦‍♀️ for both

So today I put on his pants but he weed through them. I then let him go naked and kept showing him the toilet and potty (he has both) which he sits on happily but nothing comes but then he might wee in his nappy instead after

So maybe he's not ready after all although he seems ti he almost almost there. His lack of speech doesn't help as if I ask does he need to go he doesn't answer

His understanding overall is great by the way so no issues there and yes he's getting help with speech all the relevant people are involved and helping etc and he's coming on nicely but it just makes toilet training hard

So from what I've put above about him sometimes weeing in nappy but sometimes on floor is he ready or not yet?

Hi @thecatwhogotthecream, I've got a just turned 4 yo boy and we only fairly recently cracked wees in the toilet. He has quite severe speech issues. We were advised by the health visitor to teach him to go on a schedule and not expect him to tell us whether or not he needs to go.

So we got a kitchen timer and took him to the toilet (we skipped the potty by this point) every 30 mins to start with, then every hour. Then loads of praise and rewards for getting a wee in the loo (we used chocolate buttons as a reward even though the HV said don't use food!)

The naked from the waist down thing didn't work for us at all. We kept DS in pull ups until we had had quite a few wees in the toilet then switched to pants We did all nappy/pants changes sat on the toilet as well. It did take several weeks but now he is almost totally dry. I was say my DS was showing fewer signs of readiness than yours so persevere!

@SatinHeart thank u so much for replying. He actually done 2 wees on the toilet yesterday and I'm taking him every hour and for now I'm keeping him in pull ups then just taking him every hour and sometimes success like twice yesterday and other times no like this morning. I told nursery today so I think they will bring him every hour too for me Altho he's only there 3 hours in the morning. Not sure how long until I put him in pants. Underpants I mean

That's fab news @thecatwhogotthecream - did he seem really pleased/proud that he got a wee in the toilet? Does he respond well to praise?

We switched to pants once we were happy DS could wee in the loo on command, so we would take him to the loo, he'd sit down and we'd go "ready steady wee" and he'd do one. So we knew he definitely understood which muscles etc were involved and could feel the sensation of releasing the wee if that makes sense.

thecatwhogotthecream · 10/03/2022 10:59

He seemed happy enough yes but when he done a poo in his nappy I showed me flushing it down the toilet and he was very interested then!

I'm really hoping it doesn't take too long as he's nearly 4 and I'm sick of nappies etc now but equally I won't rush him. I'll just keep taking him every hour and see how he gets on

It will happen - I've had a couple of boys like this (they have autism). It happens eventually! One insisted on pooing on the bathroom floor for months before we finally got one in the toilet, after that he just did them in the toilet without an issue. Stay strong x

This afternoon he's only done 1 wee in the toilet and that's it but it's also hard with the baby following us around needing attention etc it's super hard

He also seems content to take off his pants and do his business (either 1 or 2) on the floor so is he grasping it? Cos sometimes on toilet but not other times so a bit confusing

I don't know about the doing it on the floor as mine has never done that, but we've definitely had 'sometimes in the toilet, sometimes in the pants'. I think it means progress!

Thanks I'm trying to stay calm lol

Hi,
My little boy is 4 in June, delayed by about a year in speech also.

We started in jan when we had to isolate, for a week I did no nappy at all in the day, naked from the waste down. I got a sticker chart for when he did a wee poo, sat on the potty and washed his hands...

If he had an accident I took him to the potty and said when you need a wee wee this is where you go.... we went days with accidents then one day it just clicked! Once he got it we tried pants and going out and he just kept having accidents.

I then bought him boxers, which stopped the accidents. The feeling of pants was to close to nappies I think.

It's all trial and error, but keep going :)

marypoppins2022 · 13/03/2022 18:01

Hey @calmdownguys didn't u find it hard with speech delay? AnywT so far so good

Wednesday 2 wees on potty
Thursday 1
Friday 1
Saturday 2
Today 4

So deffo at least something every day. What we are doing is afternoons after nursery or at the weekend putting him in pants. When he goes to take them down try and get him to the toilet on time. Sometimes works sometimes not. But also taking him every half hour. Then nearer to dinner and bed time putting him back in the pull up.

Does that all sound ok do u think?

Oh and nursery taking him every hour too for the 3 hours he's there

marypoppins2022 · 13/03/2022 18:02

By pants I mean actual underpants from primark

marypoppins2022 · 21/03/2022 21:00

If he missed a day cos we busy out and about will it matter? Been training almost 2 weeks now

calmdownguys · 24/03/2022 20:36

The speech delay was hard because he wouldn't tell us when he needed to go.

Don't break the cycle if your going with pants in the day keep it to pants no matter how many accidents..
If your able to take some time off the mother on bottom really did us wondered, it's a week house bound but he was on his way.

My son still have pull ups on a night, but that's because he's a big drinker too

Xxx
