Toddler won't go to the toilet at night

Hi everyone, hope you can help. I have a 4 yo and he's fully trained and dry during the day. I thought he wasn't ready at night yet but recent events lead me to suspect that he is waking up but choosing to go in his nappy then go to the bathroom. The bathroom is directly opposite his bedroom it couldnt be closer. Ive talked to him about it and he says he knows he needs to go to the toilet if he wakes up. I don't want to take the nappies off him and confuse him if he isn't ready. I'm not exactly sure of any other way to know though 🤷🏻‍♀️

E.g. he woke up at 5 one morning which is early, I told him he needed to go back to sleep, he didnt, lay there chatting to himself and then half an hour later he's shouting to say his nappy has leaked. I know for a fact he wakes up during the night because I hear him.

How can I get him to go to the toilet?

I would try without a nappy. If you make it easier for him to just pop into loo then back to bed he might do it.

Take it off and see what happens

What is the light situation? Some kids need more light in the room. When I was a kid my mum used to leave the bathroom light on and my door open slightly so I could see the light

Light in hall or bathroom if you think the dark is a problem and no nappy

Would leaving a potty in the bedroom help? I think by this age you just need to try without nappies at night and maybe say if he stays dry for a week he will get a special treat to incentivise him.
