I’ve tried potty training my DS 3 yrs old 3 x now. He is very reliable when naked bottom down at home, but won’t poo. He’s had to have suppositorys because he held himself for a few days while we were potty training. So I gave up to get the constipation issues sorted. Now his nursery have told me he went in the toilet and took his nappy off and had a wee in the potty, I’m really pleased it looks like we’re ready to do it this time! However I’ve been trying tonight and he is literally weeing constantly, he’s running to the toilet really fast and suddenly, and usually getting there. But pants or trousers on his not even trying. My main question is if he’s weeing every 5 - 10 mins maybe he can’t hold himself enough to train? I don’t want to traumatise him and make a thing out of it but he’s 3 and 3 months and I’m feeling the pressure a bit. Thanks x

Test his bladder by putting tissue in his nappy or pull up if he can keep that dry he's ready. I find the problem with being v bare or just in loose trousers is when you dress them your back to square one. Safegaurding and hygiene means they must be dressed in childcare. Id just go with it for a few days

Have you had a look at the oh crap potty training book? There's lots of support for common issues like holding etc.

Generally I think you need to do a solid 3/4 days of bare bum and not doing much else than getting the habits there, then pants for a day, then full outfit. Doing it one stage at a time, like building blocks.

I've worked with children for 29 years and potty trained more than I can remember. Every one that trained bare bum at home went back to the start when dressed. If child is ready it typically takes under a week to e reasonably dry and clean. The oh crap book is pretty extreme in its approach. I think the best information for issues like pooh holding is the continence charity website....ERIC. and its prime aim is not selling books.

Thanks so much for the replies. Update is that he went to nursery and went no nappy, I can see they tried because I sent him with a mountain of clothes everything single thing was soaked upon return (he was dry and in a nappy) his key worker told me he got so upset and wouldn’t sit on the potty, went rigid etc… she said he’s not happy, not ready, so leave it for now. They have been great for advice so I’m going to leave it. He was very quiet for the rest of the day and seemed off. I’m not going to try and force this I will not have my son traumatised and upset over this, I don’t care how old he is I’m not going to force him. I’m 20 wks pregnant too and he’s got a lot of change coming I want him as happy and relaxed as possible and I bet my bottom dollar he’ll do it himself. Thanks for advising, I just don’t want to feel like I’m babying him but I honestly don’t think it’s going on atm x
