"Pretty much" potty trained DS in nappy for plane?

DS 2.5yrs is "pretty much" potty trained. Maybe 1 wee accident a week. Poo is more hit and miss - sometimes he's great about telling us and making it to the toilet, sometimes he tells us but not early enough, sometimes he doesn't until he's done it in his pants.

We have a 5.5hr plane trip coming up soon and I'm worried about dealing with potentially multiple accidents on the flight. What if he needs to go when the fastened seatbelt sign is on? Plus those toilets on planes are tiny for us to try and get in with him.

Would it be a terrible idea and just confuse him to put him in a nappy for the flight?

I would. Just as a one off.

Ducksurprise · 26/09/2021 07:45

I always put them in pants and then put a pull up over the pants, that way of he has an accident he realises straight away and he feels wet. If he has a poo accident you just throw the pants away with the nappy. I found this way they didn't get confused.

Mustardbay · 26/09/2021 07:45

I'd use a pull up and call them pants, he might be fine with no accidents but then you don't have to stress.

FusciasBright21 · 26/09/2021 07:46

Yes I would. I used to put DC back in pull ups for long car journeys at that stage. Didn't confuse her or delay things at all

I would put them in pants with a nappy on top.

My Ds is similar age and when we do long car journeys we do pants then nappy

saltedcaramelanything · 26/09/2021 07:48

Okay great. I think pants and pull ups over them is a good idea. That feels much less stressful for us. Thanks

Definitely do it. Not just for the flight but for the whole airport security and check in and all the rest of it.

Take him to the loo lots too - not much else to do on a flight after all - but you’ll be sunk otherwise if he needs to go when the seatbelt sign is up for turbulence.

One accident a week isn't potty trained, put him in a pull up

TheSockMonster · 26/09/2021 07:55

I think I’ve seen reusable cloth pull-ups which might be less confusing. Tell him they’re special travel pants!

EatSprayGlove · 26/09/2021 08:00

We used pull ups on our plane journeys (4-5hrs) even the year mine were secure. Didn't do pants just pull ups because there's a lot of waiting not just on the plane and it worked fine for us and didn't cause any confusion.

gogohm · 26/09/2021 08:08

Use a pull up not a nappy

saltedcaramelanything · 26/09/2021 08:22

Sorry yes, would definitely be pull ups that we use at nighttime too.

I still put my DC (3.5) in a pull-up for long car trips. They're daytime trained but not while asleep and they often have a nap in the car on a long trip. Doesn't seem to have caused any confusion at all (if they're awake, they'll ask to go to the toilet even if in a pull-up). And we can do without having to clean up an accident on a long journey just because they fell asleep!

IceandIndigo · 29/09/2021 15:49

I'd not hesitate to use a pull up in this situation, but if he's potty trained be aware he might be reluctant to consciously go in a nappy. We put my DS in a pull up for a long car journey when we knew he would be napping for most of it and he just held it until we stopped and produced his travel potty. So I'd use the pull up but still offer him the opportunity to use the toilet when it's possible to do so.

SkankingMopoke · 29/09/2021 16:18

Maybe get a different brand of pull ups to his usual night time ones (so they are a different colour/design) and dub them 'aeroplane pants'?

Bollindger · 29/09/2021 16:25

At 2.5 he will understand if you tell him that your going to give him big boy pull ups, just in case.
Mine did and wore them on journeys.
But once home I saw told No mummy, when I unpacked them.

Rhioplepog · 29/09/2021 16:46

I just took my 2 year old to Ibiza and she has been trained for about 6 months, I still put a pull up on her and it was a good job as the seatbelt sign was on for a large part of the return flight. It hasn’t set anything back and I just kept thinking about if I hadn’t and she had done a wee on a plane seat it would have been a right pain in the ass!

Fallagain · 29/09/2021 16:47

Put him in a nappy. Plane toilets can be scary and there is no where to use an actually potty on the plane.

saltedcaramelanything · 30/09/2021 00:22

We flew yesterday and thank goodness we put him in pull ups - as he needed to go just as the fastened seatbelt sign went on for landing. He was really not happy having to go in the nappy though, poor thing. But definitely better than being in his pants
