Did we start too early? 6 weeks in and so many accidents.

Hello hello. My son is 2 1/2, quite a wild soul, he runs rather than walks, full of beans and loves life. Throw the usual 2 year old tantrums in the mix haha

We started potty training him about 6 weeks ago. It took him about a week for him to get it, to hold and knowing how to release.

I feel like we've only made slight progress, he does not mind being put on the potty and knows how to release the wee, he holds it for quite long as well but as soon as we forgot to put him on, usually we have an accident. He always noticed himself and then tells us. At times it happens that he has told us and it also happens that it comes, he stops himself, then he tells us and we go to the potty or toilette - he has no preference as such but tells us big potty pls or small potty.

He always knows when the poo comes and tells us - there have been no poo accidents.

Did we start too early but even if, I don't want to go back to nappies, so that's not an option. Will he get there eventually? I feel like everyone I talk to, they trained for a week or so and after 2 weeks their children got it.

If he's getting all his poos on that's great!

It sounds like he might just need some prompting for wees, which you will need to remember to do. Maybe set an alarm on your phone every hour, or every 90 mins if he's a bit of a camel. And sit him on it when the alarm goes off. Also before you go out, after you get back etc.

We also did a sticker chart which worked well.

2.5 is a good age for it, so I'd give it another couple of weeks with you promoting him regularly. They can easily get caught up with playing etc and not think about it, even if they've grasped what they should be doing. Good luck!

Just keep going. He’s doing great.

If you work really hard to avoid accidents by keeping to a schedule of how long he can normally hold it so you get a good 2/3 weeks in the bag of almost zero accidents it will start to really reinforce to him the association of how hes feeling and releasing only in a potty, then you can start to ease back on the schedule gradually by leaving slightly longer gaps between taking him (do not let accidents spiral). Make sure you put the effort in to keep persuading him to sit and stay on the potty during this time by making it fun, even get the iphone out when necessary. It will then really start to become habit in that he knows to stay dry and only release in the potty, at the moment its probably a bit confusing to him because hes still releasing in his pants often enough to not only want to go down one route.
