Using the toilet on their own

Hi. Not really a potty training issue but wasn't sure where else to post. I need advice and help please. My DS is 5 but will not use the toilet upstairs without me or his dad being upstairs with him. He is fine at school and was fine when we went to a caravan for the weekend. When I asked what's different he said it's because we are on the same level. I have tried reward charts, treats and incentives but nothing will work. It's becoming tiring as I have to stop what I'm doing for example cooking as he will stand their and hold himself otherwise. Any advice would be welcomed. For context if we moved all his toys upstairs into his room he wouldn't go up there and play either.

My DD is similar, getting a downstairs loo has been a godsend! Could you try gradually reducing your involvement? Wait til he's pulled down his trousers and walk out the bathroom, downstairs or into your bedroom etc, then walk away when he's just into the bathroom, then hover on the stairs til he's started etc...?

Sounds like he is scared of being up stairs by himself. I would put some of his favourite toys in his room and play with him up there, when he is used to that start doing jobs in different rooms upstairs while he plays in his bedroom.
