3 year old problems

Ds just turned 3 last week and we're trying to toilet train again. So far he's much better than any previous attempts as he will accept going in to the toilet without getting really upset. But it still won't click and I don't know how to help him.

Today, he said "pee pee" so lots of praise, we ran to the toilet, he stood on a step (doesn't want to sit) and tried to pee but nothing happened. No problem, loads of praise for trying and we went back to playing. Tried again a few minutes later, same situation. But then a minute after going back to the living room he peed. We went for another try to see if we could get some of it in the toilet but his full pee was in his pants.

So he knows he needs and he stood for a good few minutes in total at the toilet trying but only managed once he was away from the toilet? What can we do to help this?

Try a potty instead. Keep it in the room he is in. Spend at least 3 days at home naked on the bottom half of his body.

Thank you. We've had no luck with the potty at all, he just screams and gets really upset if you even mention it. He is one of the most stubborn children I've ever come across though so I have a horrible feeling that we won't get anywhere until he decides that actually he will go to the toilet after all.

Agree with pp. Stay at home for a few days with him bottomless or naked. Harder when he won't use a potty though. I know you can get toddler urinals to stick in the wall, I wonder if there are freestanding ones you could have in the room with you?

Sounds like a plan for the summer holidays then!

Has anyone ever noticed an issue that the child doesn't seem to know how to squeeze the pee out for want of a better description? The amount of time we were at the toilet just before he stepped away and did it elsewhere suggests he didn't 'try' at all as surely if you were that close to needing then any squeeze would make you go? Or am I just thinking of my pelvic floor post babies?!
