My little boy is 3 next month, on Friday he suddenly decided to start using the toilet.
He would tell me when he wanted to go and only had one accident.
Since then he’s been very hit and miss. He has times when it’s obvious he needs to go as he plays with himself but he point blank refuses and ends up wetting himself.
Then there are times when he just goes into the bathroom, gets his seat and step out, puts his seat on the toilet and wees.
I just don’t know what to do, do we carry on or just leave it? I think he must know when he needs to go otherwise he wouldn’t have times when he tells me he needs it, or he wouldn’t just take himself off and go by himself.
But other times he’s so against going.

Is it best to just leave it for a few months?
Thanks

I would personally stick with it. It can take a few weeks / months for them to have much less accidents.
Could you reward and overly praise the times he gets it right and when he wets himself ignore and say next time.......
When you know he needs to go encourage with him by reading a book / watching a video / putting on favourite music / blow bubbles / give him a small sweet treat?
It’s taken my 3 year old around 2 months to be pretty consistent.
It’s an amazing milestone

Hi,
Yes we give him loads of praise, he gets a chocolate coin for sitting on trying then another if he actually does something.
But at times it doesn’t matter if he’s actually wetting himself right there, he’ll be adamant he won’t sit on. He’ll tell me it’s coming and I say oh quick sit on potty or toilet and I’ll get the coins. Sometimes he’ll just look at me and say no.

It’s quite exhausting. His older sister had a few accidents, as they all do, but she was never a refuser if we caught her and offered her treats. He’s just so stubborn.

I think I may get some bubbles and books for the potty/toilet though and see if it makes him more relaxed about it.
Thanks for your suggestions.
