Give up or keep going?

My son is 27 months and we started potty training him over Easter weekend using the Oh Crap method. We've now been going for 9 days. He seemed to get the idea quite quickly and we didn't really have a lot of accidents. He was initially quite enthusiastic but at some point he started to resist the idea of sitting on the potty, possibly we were pushing him too much. This got worse after he spent 3 days at nursery - he kept refusing to sit on the potty when they asked him (getting increasingly upset) and had a number of wee accidents. The first day he was there they ended up putting him in a nappy because he was upset and asking for one. I did feel like we were making progress over the course of the week though, by the third day in nursery he managed to wee in the potty twice there, albeit with a lot of encouragement, and only had one accident right at the end of the day.

At home we don't have accidents and he will go to the potty by himself but only when he really needs to go - for example this morning I took his nighttime nappy off at 7am and he didn't wee until 11am! We wanted to go out but felt like we couldn't leave the house until he had peed. Earlier in the morning I managed to get him to sit by bribing him with his favourite TV show but he just sat and didn't produce anything. If we ask him to sit on the potty or if he needs to go he will say no and if we persist or try to lead him to the potty he gets upset. On the rare occasions he does succeed in using it he seems pleased with himself and proudly carries it to the toilet and tips it in. He will also happily declare that "poo and wee goes in the potty", so it's not like he doesn't understand.

Part of me feels like it's unfair to keep going when the whole idea of the potty seems to upset him. Also I keep hearing people say that they tried and it was difficult, and then tried again some time later and it was easy. But DH really doesn't want to give up, he thinks it's still early days, DS is making progress and some resistance is normal.

Thoughts?

I'm with you. Leave it fir a month and I'm sure it will be easier. Plus, the weather will probably be better and potty training is always easier in warm weather without layers of clothes Smile

Thank you. We decided in the end to keep going, as we felt he was making progress. I still wouldn't say he is enthusiastic, but he is showing more willingness to sit on the potty and this morning he even used it all by himself while I was making his breakfast! We had a couple of wee accidents over the weekend, but both times he was outside playing.

He is back at nursery tomorrow (he goes 3 days a week), so we'll see how that goes. Unfortunately there is a particular nursery worker who he doesn't seem to gel with, and she's the person who mainly looks after him on Tuesdays. Last week he went much better on Thursday when she wasn't there. I think her approach is to lead him to the potty every 30 minutes and prompt him to go, whereas he's shown he's quite capable of holding on and the most successful thing for us at home has been to back off him.

It's unfortunate that hesitant get on with one of the staff.

When you're out in the garden, do you take a potty with you?
