Desmopressin

Has anyone used for desmopressin for nocturnal enuresis? My son is 6 and we're considering it. Would you recommend? How well did it work? Have you experienced any side effects?

Many thanks

Have you not tried an alarm first?

DailyLaundry · 24/03/2021 13:05

Is this after consultation with a GP or HCP?

My dc is similar but not considering drugs yet until he's older. Our plan is to try an alarm this summer...

Hi, yes we saw a private consultant last summer as we have had cases of childhood nocturnal enuresis in the family and know it can be hereditary. He said we could have drugs if we wanted, but he recommended waiting and using pull-ups/not making a thing of it.

After a while, my son refused to wear pull-ups and so we tried an alarm, which worked perfectly! Sadly we have since regressed and are now, once again, using the alarm. Except this time, my son is not happy about it.

Like all parents, I want to do my best to look after his mental health, never more so than now, during the pandemic. Cracking bed wetting would really give him a boost. I plan to persevere with the alarm until after Easter hols, then maybe we go with the drugs.

Just keen to hear about the experiences of others to help inform my decision.

Many thanks!

Thanks for the info OP - wondering what's in store for us!
Maybe post in another section rather than potty training if you don't get any replies?

Yes, we used it. Fabulous, worked, no side effects.

Duckfamily · 24/03/2021 22:47

Thank you ThePricklySheep. So glad it's worked for you guys. It's good to hear the positives. It's just knowing when the balance has tipped I guess.

DailyLaundry, best of luck on your journey. Advice we got from our practitioner was to relax and keep pull ups on as no point everyone waking in the night to change sheets etc. Drink when he's thirsty during the day (rather than ensuring 6-8 cups are consumed as usually advised). Then the usual no drinks at least an hour before bed, double void before going to bed (as sometimes it doesn't all come out on the first toilet visit) - we go after brushing and then again immediately before we say goodnight. The alarm worked a treat for us first time around, so definitely worth a try. This evening my son was fine wearing it again. We persevere!
