Potty training before 2 - any experiences?

I posted before that my now 20-month year old had started asking to poo on the toilet, and getting a bit upset at nappy changes and so was thinking I might have to accelerate plans for potty training (I hadn’t intended to until at least 2, and only then if there were clear signs of readiness - I was definitely in no rush!)

She is still asking, and so my DH and I have decided to give it a go over Christmas as we’ll be home and both on annual leave and we won’t have to worry about nursery for a little while longer.

We’re planning to follow the Oh Crap method but just wondered how other people who trained their toddlers this early found it? Her speech and comprehension are very good so don’t have worries on that score.

Hiyah new mum 0305. Hope your ok. How's the toilet training going now? If you've read my post my daughter only pees and poo on either toilet or potty if she's half naked, I'm washing soooo many of her trousers and underwear now ha ha!

I just sat her on the toilet or potty about 3 times a day after main meals when she's more likely to need the toilet and if she got up we just let her because no point us forcing her. I also, as wrong as this sounds, took her into the bathroom with me and brought her potty in too and let her have the choice if she wanted to sit on it. She could turn see mummy using the toilet and see how to do it herself. Eventually after a week she started sitting on potty or toilet on her own. There were ALOT of accidents though in the first days, it was quite frustrating but couldn't be helped. I give her lots of praise for peeing and pooing where she's meant to, or even if she does nothing I say we'll do e fir trying. But now we are working on next issue of getting her to learn pulling her knickers up and down which I have a feeling won't be quick Hmm

It's really good your child is asking to go for a poo on her own, . I found with my daughter she wasn't comfortable to poo on the potty or toilet until she was comfortable weeing in them. My daughter like your child started to show she was irritated by the pull ups and starting tugging at them and taking them off.

Hope I've been a help. Good luck! xxx

Sorry, me again! Grin

I just remembered to add that today I took her outside for a short outing for the first time today since I started toilet training and Ive been quite nervous to do it. I sat her on the toilets there but she didn't really like it. So I guess she's only comfortable with the toilet at home at the moment. Plus she does have accidents at preschool. It's a working progress. I think a travel potty really would come in handy actually

The author of that Oh Crap book must be making a fortune - everyone I know used it. We just stopped putting on nappies and made DC sit on potty every two hours, then
gradually followed her cues more (maybe 4 days). No accidents after 2 days, would say she was pretty much totally trained within a week at 25months. I'm not sure the whole commando stage then pants etc is necessary, and I definitely didn't need to read a whole book. Just for anyone thinking about starting and feeling they need to properly read up on it!
