4yo leaking through night nappies

My 4yo son has been toilet trained for about a year, but still wets at night. He's in Drynites size 8-15 (very tall and broad, is also in 7-8 clothes) but more often than not will soak through - and it's not that the fit is poor, the nappies are literally full to bursting.

I know it's not seen as an issue until 5, but this doesn't seem normal. He has several drinks through the day, nothing dark and water only after 4pm (bedtime between 7 and 8). He goes to the loo regularly and can hold it when needed, although not for long.

I don't know what to do and am contemplating just going nappy free and seeing he wakes to the wetness, as at the moment he sleeps straight through. Does anyone have any advice or experience? He's at school now and it feels like something I need to help him get on top of Sad

Have you tried the Eric website, there's lots of advice on there.
I'd personally make sure he drinks plenty during the day then try to restrict fluid intake 2hrs or so before bed (think 50mls of water at a time rather than a full cup etc.) toilet 30-45 mins before bed then again immediately beforehand.
There are lots of helpful tips on the site.

Thank you. We do the two wees, but haven't restricted the liquid really - two hours before bed encompasses tea, so felt a bit mean. You're right though, it's probably worth a try.

My son only came out of dry nites 6 months ago at the age of 6.5. He had been wetting heavily every night sometimes leaking. Always very full. I took the opportunity of lockdown and the good weather to try for at least 3-4 weeks to see if he could do it. After about 7-10 days he got it. I layered sheets and mattress protectors along with the bed mats and had 1-2 spare duvets at the ready to make middle of the night bed changed quick.
My point is that I'd tried before and given up after a few days of disrupted sleep and bed changing, but I think he just needed a longer period of time to get used to it.
He has a potty next to his bed for middle of night wees and still has the odd accident at night, but is generally ok.

We've just used a night time wetting alarm. After 10 days we had dry nights and are now nappy free. I wish I'd done it sooner!!! My DS is 5.

We tried cold turkey, he wasn't waking up when he was wetting himself. Just waking up in the morning soaked through.

Thank you all. Have ordered some new bedding and am going to try cold turkey, then bedwetting alarms if he doesn't wake. If none of that works, at least I'll have more to tell the GP once he turns 5. It's reassuring to hear he's not the only one though - I don't know anyone else struggling with this IRL.
