Do you believe black currant is bad for children?

My dd has been doing so well with using the toilet lately. We have been 3 months and no accidents, she is also waking virtually dry. This was until a few days ago when my mother looked after her one afternoon as I had a late hospital appointment and no one else to look after her. All of a sudden she was not getting to the toilet in time or standing there wetting herself which she appeared aware she was doing. Plus the dry night time nappy was soaking wet. This lasted a few days before returning to normal. I'm pretty sure my mum gave her black currant juice (ribena in a carton) as she always goes on about how I'm being silly when I'm saying no to black currant because it's bad for children and hinders potty training. She won't admit she gave her it and I also went to the go who did a urine test to rule out an infection or glucose in the urine, both she was clear of. How do I make my mum understand why it's bad after I've already explained so much and what the nurse told me when they did the urine test? At the moment I'm refusing to let my dd stay with her but it's a shame as it's nice they spend time together plus it would really help me out.

My eldest reverted to having accidents at about 3 when we let them have black current squash. My mum made the connection to the squash and once they stopped having it they were back to being dry and accident free. No idea why it happens but it is a thing.

I've never heard this. But I drink a lot of blackcurrant (i hate orange squash and apple is always out of stock). Ive been suffering with urge incontinence for a few months now. Interesting! Although I've always drunk a lot of squash and haven't always had urge incontinence!

DD13 is still restricted to one glass of blackcurrant cordial if we go to a pub....otherwise she spends the entire afternoon needing a wee. It took us quite a while to make the connection when she was little.

Life is a lot simpler if you just offer DC milk or water in those early years.

My older child is under the enuresis clinic at the hospital. I've been told never to give him blackcurrant!

I should have said that it was the hospital that told me never to give him blackcurrant. All the leaflets and paperwork they've supplied states that too!

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but for those in any doubt, cutting out black current juice could well be the solution to your potty training/ bed wetting/ incontinence problem.

I used to LOVE Ribena as a kid and was a late nappy wearer, bedwetter, you name it.

Never made the connection at the time.

Fast forward to DDs. Robinson’s and Ribena both consumed like water. “No added sugar” so must be OK, right? Same issues. Just assumed it ran in the family. Both girls in Drynites at one point. Expensive.

Friend suggested cutting out black current drinks and just having water or milk.

Problem solved for both virtually overnight.

Given eldest was 11 at the time, I dread to think how much money I spent on nappies and Drynites for both of them over all those years that I could have saved if I’d twigged earlier.

Given I was spending about £10 a week on them at the end, that’s £520 a year... possibly thousands!

If this advice works for you and saves you all that money, feel free to PM me and send me some of the cash you saved, lol! 😉

It irritates my bladder!
And it's bad for teeth Blush

A friend of mine’s daughter wasn’t dry at night until she was nearly 6 - went to the doctors and he told her not to drink any red squash before bed!

Stopping black current was like a
Miracle cure. I was thinking of changing both their names to
“I.P. Freely” by deed poll before I found out. Lol!
