How long can your child wait for the bathroom?

I tried searching online but all websites talk only about the actual potty training.

DD1 has been PT for a year now. She's just turning 4.

Question is: when she asks to go to the toilet, how long should she be able to hold it in? I can hold a few hours if totally necessary but I don't feel confident with taking more than 5/10 min to reach the bathroom with her.

How do you train for more bladder control?

She's slightly speech delayed so maybe it's a communication thing? She can't express her feelings fully yet.

My ds is 3.5 and can hold it for ages, because sometimes he won't go for hours and then does a massive wee. However, when he actually tells me that he needs a wee we've got a minute or so to get him to the loo. So I think he doesn't notice until the need is quite strong. We preemptively put him on the loo before outings etc and accidents are rare.

I can manage only about 2 minutes myself!

As @partofyoupoursoutofme said, lots of children can hold it for a while but you do have to pre-empt them going. Normally young children (and I'm speaking as an EY teacher so have seen many) won't be able to give a lot of notice, once they say they need it, it means they're bursting and need to go. I think at her age 5-10 mins is great! As children get older I think there awareness of the gradual build up of needing it grows, as does their ability to hold it!

I agree with the above. My 6 year old seems to go for hours without needing a wee. Often gets up in the morning and plays in her room for an hour before going 🤷‍♀️ but when she says she needs to go I would bring her straight away. It usually means she's bursting.
