I don't even know where to start. I'm really feeling down about it. DD is 22 months old and my family keep putting me down saying that she should be fully potty trained by now and she should not be wearing nappies anymore. I've tried and I don't think she understands what she's meant to be doing on the potty yet and why. It's such a challenge keeping her on there too, I've tried putting the telly on, reading books, playing, I've even tried feeding her on there!! Nothing ever works for longer than 20 mins, if that. My family say to leave her to run around without a nappy and that she will soon learn?? I don't really know where to begin and what to do that will help so I thought I'd post on here and ask for opinions.

Get a book, OP. We did, 'Oh crap, potty training!' which is designed for 20-30 month olds but didn't really fit with my parenting philosophy so we didn't follow it exactly. There's a gentler one here godiaperfree.com/potty-training/ which I'd use if doing it again.

Good luck!

Our 5's ages for coming out of nappies have ranged between 2.5 and 3.5 in the day but from 4.9 to last DS who was nearly 8 at night - and still has a wet bed most months. Each of them was different but I found terry and plastic trainer pants invaluable for several months after those ages, especially for the three boys. The girls seemed to go from being wholly unreliable to wholly reliable much more quickly. I am very glad I didn't start worrying about it all too early or 16 years of nappies would have got me down! It probably helped to have a MIL who had been a children's nurse and then had had my DH who was wet at night till quite late. I've heard it said that can run in families.

There tend to be cues that the child is ready. You can research them better but basically big one is hiding when doing poopoos. Usually in a corner or behind the curtains. DD1 did that at about 2yo however we weren't able to train her af that point and it ended up happening nearly an year later. DD2 is training now at 2y5m.

Best technique is taking off the nappy. Of course better during summer. We get summer cotton dresses from Asda for the kids to run around the garden. Those are perfect. You'll need a few...
