Help toddler won't use potty in unfamiliar placed

My 2 year old DS doesn't want to use his portable potty in unfamilar places! He has used it near where we live eg in public toilets in local park, without a problem. Then we went to visit MIL this weekend & took it with us in car & when we went out. Several times he said he needed the potty (& generally when he says so he does need), but when I got it out eg in a disabled toilet (large & clean), he refused to use it & when I tried to insist he tried he got hysterical and started screaming "I don't need wee wee" repeatedly and I couldn't persuade him otherwise.

This happened 5 times over 4 days. He didn't wee himself (phew), but on one occasion he used potty as soon as he got back to MIL's house so am not sure how much longer he could have held it! Am worried as we go out more, there will be an occasion where he has an accident because he won't use portable potty.

Just wondered if anyone's else's kid had an aversion to using potty in unfamiliar places & what you did to manage/overcome this? Oh & I do realise he will need to move on from potty to toilet, but he doesn't feel ready to do that yet (has been out of nappies just 5 weeks).

Thanks in advance for sharing suggestions/experiences Smile

There has been some progress. We went to meet friends in a park and I got same hysterics when it came to using potty in public toilet. As I knew we wouldn't be home for another hour, I ignored his shrieking protests and made him sit on the potty and then he did a massive wee! Afterwards, I congratulated him, said he did really well, what a big boy etc and promised (& gave) chocolate buttons when we got home.

Hopefully next time he might not have hysterics...
